METRO ROUNDUP: Wendlandt candidate for top award

TERRE HAUTE — Former Indiana State women’s soccer player Morgan Wendlandt has been nominated for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

The annual award, in its 22nd year, honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.

Wendlandt graduated with honors this past spring, earning a degree in marketing while also delivering the student address to her fellow graduates at Indiana State’s commencement ceremony. She was the first Sycamore soccer player to earn all-Missouri Valley Conference scholar-athlete first-team honors for three straight years and made dean’s list, athletic director’s honor roll and MVC academic honor roll each semester at ISU. The past two years, Wendlandt earned the MVC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award.

Conferences select one or two women from the nominees to represent their conference. Those names are sent to the Woman of the Year selection committee, which chooses the top 10 honorees in each division. Wendlandt is one of four initial nominees from the MVC, joined by: Mallory Duran-Sellers (softball) of Southern Illinois, Jessica Carlson (women’s soccer) of Illinois State and Jill Lageschulte (women’s track & field) of Northern Iowa.

The selection committee announces the top nine finalists in September. Top 30 honorees will be honored, and the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year winner announced, at Indianapolis on Oct. 14.

  • Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville

Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.
