Wayne Newton to vie for regional title

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute Post 346 will attempt to make a third straight trip to the American Legion baseball state finals this weekend, welcoming teams from Floyds Knobs, St. Leon and Seymour to Don Jennings Field for the Terre Haute Regional.

Post 346 (28-10) and Floyds Knobs Post 42 (18-9) have had the most successful seasons of the four. Manager John Hayes leads his team against sectional runner-up Seymour Post 89 (6-6) in today’s opener. Seymour will send right-hander Billy Rayburn to the mound against Terre Haute righty Jimmy Maxwell.

“Hoping to win the first two games and stay in the winner’s bracket,” Hayes said. “We’ve got a lot of depth in pitching. Even if we fall into the loser’s bracket, still have Scott West, Kodie Girton and Pete Lannoo [available to pitch], but it’s a lot easier if you stay in the winner’s bracket.”

Floyds Knobs comes to Terre Haute as winners of nine of its last 10 games and having played a tough schedule that included Evansville Pate, Newburgh, Rockport and Princeton. Floyds Knobs split with Princeton and Rockport but was swept by defending state champion Newburgh.

“Pitching and defense have been a consistent positive for us. Our hitting comes and goes. That’s why we’ve been in every game,” Floyds Knobs manager Jamie Knight said.

Floyds Knobs will play St. Leon Post 464 (8-18) tonight at 7:30 p.m. They have been led on the mound by left-hander Alex Wiseman, right-hander Tyler Farmer and lefty Kyle Sipes, who all threw complete-games during the sectional tournament at Madison.

“We just have to figure they’re all going to be good ballclubs,” said Hayes, who liked the effort of his team in last weekend’s sectional.

“Seemed like our kids really came together over the weekend. Our hitting, pitching and defense were good. If we can continue that, we should be in every game.”

Four regional winners from around the state and host Plymouth will vie for the state title the following weekend.

“Should be a good regional. Sounds like Terre Haute is a very good team. Floyds Knobs has a really good team. Should be really competitive regional,” Seymour manager Ben Kleber said.

Game 5 — Game 3 loser vs. Game 4 winner, 7:30 p.m.

Sunday

Game 6 — Championship, 1 p.m.

    The second game, which started after Senior Night festivities between games, ended past the Tribune-Star deadline.

    Kaden Lawson had double for South Vermillion (15-7), which finished 4-2 in the WIC.
