West Vigo line opens holes in victory

NASHVILLE, Ind. — When the box score from West Vigo’s 40-19 football victory over Brown County is read, Danny Creasey, Jacob Creasey, Skyler Warnock and Jimmy Maples will reap the statistical spoils of the Vikings’ victory.

After all, that quartet combined for 340 of the 415 rushing yards gained by the Vikings.

But don’t forget Sam McClain, Nate Owens, Jacob Riley, Patrick McVey and Tyler Murlin – West Vigo’s starting offensive line.

You won’t see those names in the box score, but West Vigo’s ball carriers saw the holes and the space they created and ran wild.

“I was very proud of the offensive line. I think things are coming together. I think they had a fresh start with a conference opponent. The line doesn’t get enough credit, but they were the difference in the game,” West Vigo coach Jeff Cobb said.

The one sin the Vikings’ line had was a spate of holding penalties, but past that, the Eagles had no answer for West  Vigo’s brawn.

Danny Creasey had the biggest day of the Vikings’ running backs. He rushed for 147 yards and four touchdowns.

Cobb credited a Creasey connection. Jacob Creasey, who had 90 yards in his own right, kept Brown County’s defense guessing on the outside, allowing Danny Creasey to gain ground inside.

“The jet sweep with Jacob Creasey really opened a lot for Danny Creasey. It’s a give-and-take and we’ll take what they give us,” Cobb said.

The die was cast on West Vigo’s opening drive. The Vikings averaged 7.1 yards per carry on 12 carries during the series. Danny Creasey capped it off, running behind center Owens for a 3-yard touchdown.

A Maples interception and 15-yard run on a fake punt set up West Vigo’s second touchdown. A 1-yard Danny Creasey run put West Vigo up 14-0.

The Vikings put the game out of reach in the final two minutes of the first half. Jacob Creasey’s 5-yard touchdown run with 1:20 left in the half polished off a 9-play, 68-yard scoring drive. Brown County’s Phillip Palmer fumbled the kickoff, and two plays later, Danny Creasey’s 16-yard touchdown scamper made it 28-0 just before the break.

The Vikings had 259 rushing yards at halftime.

The victory made a difficult trip worth it for the Vikings. Due to the Indiana 46 bridge being out at the Eel River and a Vigo County School Corporation ban on I-70 travel, West Vigo’s ride via back roads was nearly three hours.

West Vigo improved to 2-1, though it was the Vikings’ first win on the field. West Vigo was forfeited a victory when Evansville Harrison used ineligible players in West Vigo’s 52-7 loss on Aug. 17.

“Because of transportation issues – the bridge out and a safety issue on I-70 – this was a three-hour drive. Anytime the kids can travel three hours, play a conference opponent, play their first road game, and put up 28 points at the half, I was pleased,” Cobb said.

West Vigo plays at Linton next Friday.
