METRO ROUNDUP: Wayne Newton splits with Remington

TERRE HAUTE — Wayne Newton Post 346 battled quality pitching from Remington Post 280 on Saturday, managing a doubleheader spilt in American Legion baseball action.

Daulton Sexton had two hits in a 5-1 loss in the opener, and Pete Lannoo went 3 for 4 to lead Post 346 to a 4-1 victory in the second game.

Post 346 (12-5) plays today at Kokomo.

n Terre Haute team ninth — At Orlando, Fla., COA 12 Red lost Saturday morning to eventual national runner-up Vaquares 12-2 of Puerto Rico by scores of 25-12, 25-12 to finish in a tie for ninth place in the national Amateur Athletic Union tournment.

Team members are Sami Bird, Kayla Harding, Megan Heck, Madison Karrfalt, Elizabeth Lowery, Chloe Mason, Maggie Mershon, Lexi Netherlain, Adison Perry, Josie Sackett and Elle Tipton.

Baseball

n Sonic Braves win again — The Terre Haute South Sonic Braves topped Fort Wayne 14-3 in its second game in the Rose-Hulman College Tour 15U/16U Tournament on Saturday morning.

The Sonic Braves won again Saturday night 3-0 against the HC Hurricanes to advance to today’s championship round.

Conner Shipley went 2 for 3, and Spence Tofaute had a double for the squad, while Jared Wolfe tossed seven innings and allowed just two hits.

n Hollars posts win — At Bloomington, Steve Hollars was one of the winners in racing Friday at Bloomington Speedway.

Hollars won his heat and the feature for super stocks. Other winners were Brady Short in sprint cars, John DeMoss in UMP modifieds and Bryson Clark in hornets.

n East, Santos win — At Newton, Iowa, Bobby East and Bobby Santos were winners in the Casey's General Stores USAC Challenge races Friday at Iowa Speedway.

East led the final 45 turns to win the l00-lap feature for Silver Crown cars. Kody Swanson led the first 55 laps and is the leader in SC point totals going into Friday's race in Toledo.

Santos took the lead on the 23rd lap of the 30-lap main for midgets and led the rest of the way to win for the third time in the last four midget races at Iowa Speedway.

Darren Hagen took fourth and hiked his lead in the midget point totals to 151 points over Tracy Hines going into Friday's race at Toledo.

    Today is the day for the Thunder in the Valley, and the Terre Haute Triathlon is under new leadership in 2013, the 28th year for the event at Hawthorn Park.
    A former Terre Haute North track and cross country standout, Ethan Page is the race director as the race falls under the reign of Page’s new company, Crossroads Events.

    Host Terre Haute South kept its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference high school baseball title hopes alive — and clinched no worse than second place in the process — by downing Lawrence North 4-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night.
    The second game, which started after Senior Night festivities between games, ended past the Tribune-Star deadline.

    Brandon Calleja had 13 strikeouts to lead West Vigo to a 5-1 victory against South Vermillion in high school baseball Friday.
    Brandon Behringer went 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Vikings, who secured second place in the Western Indiana Conference.
    Kaden Lawson had double for South Vermillion (15-7), which finished 4-2 in the WIC.
