For Northview: ; 6-4 junior Christian Ellis; 6-5 junior C Daniel Kimball; 5-10 sophomore Gabe Rogers; 6-0 senior Devin Clark and 5-8 senior Peter Tanoos.

Team leaders — North’s Calvin Blank has averaged 26.5 points and Austin Lewis has averaged 18 for the Patriots so far. Steven Davis is also averaging double-figures at 10.5 points. Christian Ellis and Jim Mace led the Knights with eight points in Northview’s opener, but Craig Peters and Joe Ball took more shots. Peters was injured at Vincennes Lincoln, but is expected to play tonight.

Recent games — Terre Haute North defeated Evansville Central 84-83 in four overtimes on Nov. 21 and then lost 72-63 at Fishers on Nov. 24. Northview lost 69-54 at Vincennes Lincoln on Nov. 21.

Last meeting — Terre Haute North defeated Northview twice in 2012. The Patriots won the regular season game 54-41 and also defeated the Knights 62-51 in the sectional.

Coaches’ quotes — Weddle on Northview’s development: “The best opportunity we had was to play a team that’s used to having success. We get to play an opponent that’s had success again tonight.”

Weddle on Northview having over a week to prepare for its second game: “I like the fact that these guys gives their best effort and they come in very excited. The biggest thing for us is having another week to grow together. We’re trying to implement some new things offensively and defensively and they’ve adapted well to it.”

Woelfle on what North needs to improve: “We are looking for improvment on both ends, but especially on the defensive end. We gave up 72 points at Fishers and we feel as a staff that’s too much.”

Woelfle on what needs to improve defensively: “We need to communicate better. One of the things we have to do is take care of the basketball. Our opponents got too many easy transition baskets off our mistakes.”

Coaches’ quotes — Ridge on his team: “I thought we played hard but we were out of position a lot on defense. Hopefully we can keep the effort and lose the mistakes and we’ll be fine.”

Ridge on Lawrence North: “Lawrence North has their usual size. They’ve got four 6-7 kids and one 6-8 kid on their roster. We’ll have to find creative ways to stop them and get some scores.”

Ridge on Mooresville: “Mooresville lost seven seniors from a great team last year. Johnson is 6-6, and a great athlete. He can really run and jump, probably a Division I talent.”

West Vigo at South Vermillion

West Vigo at Owen Valley

The action — West Vigo’s Vikings open their 2012-2013 boys basketball season with a pair of Western Indiana Conference road games, traveling to Clinton tonight to face South Vermillion’s Wildcats (1-0, 0-0) and to Spencer on Saturday to meet Owen Valley’s Patriots (1-2, 0-0 going into a game tonight with Linton).

The time — Both varsity boys games should begin shortly after 7:30 p.m.; the girls teams play 6 p.m. opening games both nights.

The airwaves — No broadcasts are scheduled.

The coaches — Joe Boehler is 54-39 in his fifth season at West Vigo. Michael Byrum is 6-17 in his second year at South Vermillion. Chad Smith is 17-33 in his third year at Owen Valley.

Probable starting lineups — For West Vigo the guards are expected to be 5-11 senior Cade Lindsey and 5-7 senior Kyle Stewart, with frontline possibilities being 6-1 sophomore Alex West, 6-3 senior Aaron Kirby and 6-0 sophomore Braiden Cardinal or 6-1 senior Adrien Corenflos. Corenflos is coming off an injury and will not be a full-time player yet this weekend.

South Vermillion expects to start 6-1 juniors Aaron Hines and Nathan Luft at forwards and 6-2 senior Kaden Lawson, 5-10 junior Tristan Spivey and 6-0 sophomore Jordan Branz at guards.

Owen Valley’s probable starters Saturday are 5-9 junior Nolan King and 6-0 sophomore Evan Wood at guards, 6-3 senior Josh Parker and 6-0 junior Dillon Hege at forwards and 6-3 senior Austin Hunter at center.

Key reserves — For West Vigo: 6-0 senior Lance Stonebarger, 5-10 sophomore Tyler Wilson, 5-10 junior Jimmy Maples, 6-1 sophomore Hayden Corenflos, 6-2 sophomore Grant Daley and 6-0 senior Kaleb Wilkinson.

For South Vermillion: 6-0 sophomore Cole Morgan, 6-0 freshman Dru Strayer, 6-2 sophomore Logan Waldrop and 6-2 junior Kam Weyrauch.

For Owen Valley: 6-1 freshman Cameron King, 6-3 junior twins Matt and Brandon Mahoney and 6-3 sophomore Ethan Daffron.

Team leaders — Lindsey and Adrien Corenflos are returning starters and Stewart the returning sixth man for the Vikings. Branz had 19 points, Lawson 15, Hines 11 and Weyrauch 10 for the Wildcats in their season-opening win; Lawson was near the top of the state assist rankings last year. Parker is the leading returning scorer for Owen Valley, but the Patriot youngsters — Wood and Cameron King — are emerging as threats.

Recent games — South Vermillion beat Clay City 74-64 on Nov. 21, while Owen Valley has lost to Eastern Greene (59-42), beaten Vincennes Rivet (50-37) and lost to Bloomfield (48-45).

Last meeting — West Vigo won against both opponents at home last season, 79-60 over the Wildcats and 56-36 over the Patriots. South Vermillion’s most recent win in the series was a 51-48 decision three years ago, while Owen Valley beat the Vikings in the 2011 sectional.

Coaches’ quotes — Boehler on the Vikings: “There’s days when I see us looking really good. We’ve prepared about as well as we can [with a later start to the season] and we’re ready to go now.”

Byrum on the Wildcats: “We learned a lot of things about our ballclub [in the season opener]. We’re battling to be consistent, but if we rebound well and take care of the ball, good things happen. The kids play hard and they play together, they just have to play smart.”

Boehler on the Wildcats: “They have a lot of kids with varsity experience and they’re coming in with some confidence. That first win was a big boost for them.”

Byrum on the Vikings: “It’s a good program that’s good every year. Throughout [recent] history South Vermillion has struggled against them, and we’ll try to change that.”

Smith on the Patriots: “We got smacked around in our first game, but we improved after that. This is a team that’s going to get better each game.”

Boehler on the Patriots: “They’re just like us; they lost the majority of their scoring, but they still have good, athletic kids looking to make names from themselves.”

Smith on the Vikings: “I don’t know what to expect. They lost kids like [we did], but younger kids get to step up. They’re learning about their team just like we are.”
