TERRE HAUTE —
The girls showed a little offensive firepower, while defense dominated the boys’ portion of the Vigo County/Northview high school soccer jamboree that started Saturday morning at Terre Haute North.
Running four 20-minute periods for each gender, the girls went first with Terre Haute South outscoring West Vigo 4-0. Senior Courtney Hubbard contributed three goals and senior Kaley Buza had the other for the Braves.
After a 0-0 tie between North and Northview in the second period, North edged South 1-0 behind a 16-yard goal from the right side by junior Kaleigh Sutliff in the third period.
In the final period for girls, Northview got two goals apiece from junior Libby Deckard and sophomore Hannah Minor in blanking West Vigo 4-0.
If you were following closely, you noticed that the host Patriots recorded two shutouts in their periods. First-year coach Kyle Baker, who replaced Emily Knight, said Cristen Bray and Kelsey Woods alternated at goalkeeper against Northview and Lani Troxel and Brooke Frederick took turns guarding the net against South.
“We looked at it as an exhibition, so we let all the girls play,” Baker told the Tribune-Star. “But we wanted to apply what we worked on all summer. I think they did a good job of transitioning what we’ve been training to a 20-minute period.”
Baker admitted that everything did not go perfectly.
“There are a lot of things we would like to have seen go better,” he noted. “Technically, we were not as sharp as what we were hoping to be… We gave the ball away way too easily.”
From the South perspective, veteran coach Dave Drake said he saw positives during both of his team’s periods.
“Against North, we had good possession of the ball,” he mentioned. “We had a little bit of a defensive problem that we’ll work out. We played just a little bit slow… but I think that’ll pick up as the season goes.
“We tried to get 22 players on the field [at different times] to see which group works better, which has a little cohesiveness and knows the person’s moves… We were looking at everything today and figuring out which groups are going to be at an advantage of playing with each other and which ones aren’t.”
Northview coach Lauren Trennel praised sophomore Mannah Mace, who was in goal for both of her squad’s shutout periods, along with a few other Knights.
“Hannah Minor and Kaysia Reberger worked well together down the right side,” Trennel pointed out. “There were some nice give-and-gos, some nice distributions out of our center mids [midfielders] to our outside mids on both sides.”
Meanwhile, there was one big reason why West Vigo’s girls struggled Saturday: They had only 10 players available.
“Today was just a learning experience for us,” acknowledged West Vigo first-year coach Scott McClain, who replaced John Prochnow. “We’re a fairly young team. We’re low on numbers. We have 12 [players] on our team, but two of them are injured right now. That put us down to 10 for today. That makes it hard to defend 11 [opponents] on the field when you’re down one. But overall we’re anxious to get started.”
McClain added that he thought the Vikes’ defense “looks good.”
“I think we’re going to be fine for the season,” he predicted.
When the boys took their turn on the field, West Vigo and South tied 1-1 in the first period as sophomore Justin Kump scored on a penalty kick for the Vikings and senior Rush Sommerville answered with a close-range goal for the Braves.
“Our forwards are doing a good job of staying wide and what that does is open alleys in the middle,” South coach Eric Graves explained. “Rush exploited one of those alleys, took it to the near post and put it away nice and easy.”
In the second period, North freshman Noah Brewster provided the only goal with a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory over Northview.
The North-South and West Vigo-Northview matchups were scoreless ties in the third and fourth periods respectively as the jamboree concluded.
“I think we were not very precise in our passing in our final period [against South],” veteran North coach John Welch assessed. “I don’t think that’s our problem this year. I think that will come more easily as we get more used to each other.
“I thought our keepers did very well — Aaron Shema and Alex Curry against Northview and Myles Curry and Chris Schenck against South.”
Graves said his Braves are doing well on defense, but “there’s still a little bit of communication problems back there.”
“We’re working on getting that chemistry together a little bit,” he continued.
West Vigo’s boys, who tied in both of their periods, looked impressive to new coach Culley DeGroote, who replaced Juan Montanez.
“I would like to have seen a little bit more offense, but I thought we moved the ball,” he mentioned. “In our first quarter [against South], I thought we moved the ball really well.
“All in all, I’m pretty happy. I thought it was a really good first day for us. We have a lot of new faces. But even our returning players are in completely different positions, so it’s going to take a while for everyone to get used to their new roles.”
DeGroote also complimented the Vikings’ defense.
“I thought it was good,” he said. “I certainly can’t complain. We’ve just got to talk a little bit more. We’re a work in progress.”
Another coach, Dustin Jorgensen of Northview, put a positive spin on his group’s defensive unit.
“Hopefully, that will help us be close in every game we play this year,” he noted.
Despite going scoreless in periods against North and West Vigo, Jorgensen believes his players got what they wanted out of the jamboree.
“We had a lot better possession in the second period that we played,” he pointed out. “That’s what we’ve kinda been focusing on is possession. We’re trying to make sure we have opportunities.
“We want to work the ball on the offensive third of the field a lot more than we did last year.”
