TERRE HAUTE —
Is the Indiana State baseball team living right or living dangerously? Actually, there’s no right or wrong answer. The correct answer is both.
Nebraska-Omaha — ISU’s opponent this weekend at Bob Warn Field — is making its maiden voyage in Division I. ISU’s series against the Mavericks could easily have been viewed as an ill-timed detour from the task at hand as the Sycamores have visions of an NCAA Tournament at-large bid and/or Missouri Valley Conference championship dancing in their heads.
For eight-plus innings, it seemed UNO would provide a rude awakening. The Mavericks shut the Sycamores down and had a one-run lead with one out in the bottom of the ninth. It portended to be a devastating loss for ISU.
Then Ryan Walterhouse made everything all right.
With Jordan Pearson aboard, Walterhouse hit a line-drive home run to left field to give ISU a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Mavericks.
A loss to UNO would have dealt a significant blow to ISU’s at-large hopes. ISU is currently 46th in the Ratings Percentage Index, UNO is 277th. To avoid a RPI drop, 33-10 ISU must sweep the 11-31 Mavericks.
The close call had everyone in the ISU dugout relieved that the game ultimately turned the Sycamores’ way.
“They showed up and made a lot of plays against us. They put pressure on us,” Walterhouse said.
UNO starting pitcher Andrew Reck was most responsible for keeping the Sycamores under wraps. Reck allowed just three hits in seven innings of work and was masterful in conjuring unproductive outs for ISU even when it did have runners aboard. ISU hit into nine 6-3 ground outs; eight came against Reck.
“He had some off-speed pitches and we’re used to guys being in the low 90s as Friday night pitchers. He had average stuff, but he knew how to use it. He shut us down for eight innings or so,” ISU first baseman Jon Hedges said.
Reck was a familiar face for ISU coach Rick Heller.
“He was with me at Northern Iowa when they dropped the program,” Heller said. “I knew he was going to give us a battle. It wasn’t to be for us offensively today.”
ISU starting pitcher Dakota Bacus was just as strong as Reck was. Bacus threw eight innings, struck out eight, and gave up just four hits. One of them, however, was a solo home run by Caleb Palensky that just cleared the right field fence in the sixth inning to put the Mavericks up 1-0.
Hedges gave ISU a one-out lifeline in the ninth when he drew a walk against UNO reliever Curtis Smith. Pearson pinch-ran for Hedges and Walterhouse stepped up. Walterhouse has struggled in recent games, but got a pitch he could drive. He hit a low-liner to left that cleared the fence by about a foot, over the out-stretched glove of UNO left fielder Alex Mortensen.
“I was looking for a pitch up to drive and put in the gap. With Pearson on first, a single gets him to third. Luckily, he hung a slider and I got it on the barrel,” said Walterhouse, who had never hit a walk-off home run at any level.
For UNO, it was a hard-luck loss. The Mavericks have lost four of their last five games by one run. Meanwhile, ISU moved to 8-6 in one-run games.
“We have that never lay down, never die attitude. We overcame it today,” Hedges said.
ISU and UNO hook up for the second game of the series at 2 p.m. today. It was a game originally scheduled to be part of a doubleheader, but it was changed to a single-game earlier this week.

FROM THE PRESS BOX: Close, but no cigar, theme for ISU sports in 2012-13
When I covered my first event of Indiana State’s 2012-13 season — ISU’s opening football game at Indiana — I was the first one in the press box at IU’s Memorial Stadium. I’m never the first one in the press box.
Maybe the prospect of ISU’s season had me so pumped that I decided to get it started close to three hours early? (Or more truthfully, maybe I was over-vigilent about predicted traffic horrors on the Indiana 46 bypass that never came to pass.) -
