MotoGP returns to Indy on Sunday

TERRE HAUTE — The MotoGP Grand Prix of Indianapolis motorcycle race returns to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday.

It is the third edition of the race on the 2.621-mile IMS road course. Previous winners are Valentino Rossi (2008) and Jorge Lorenzo (2009).

Lorenzo is dominating the MotoGP class in 2010. The Spainaird has won seven races on his Yamaha, including five of the last six events. Lorenzo has already won on American soil when he won the U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca on July 25.

Lorenzo has a commanding 77 point lead over runner-up Dani Pedrosa.

Three American riders — Nicky Hayden, rookie Ben Spies and Colin Edwards — are in the top 10 in points. Hayden, who rides for Ducati, is sixth. Spies, who rides for Yamaha, is seventh. Edwards, who also rides for Yamaha, is 10th.

IMS will have a pit walkabout on Friday from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Practice for all three bike classes begins at 12:40 p.m. Friday when the 125cc bikes take to the track. Moto2 (formerly the 250cc class) practices at 1:55 p.m. and MotoGP practices at 3:10 p.m.

Qualifying for all three classes takes place Saturday afternoon. The 125cc bikes start qualifying at 1 p.m., followed by MotoGP at 1:55 p.m. Moto2 practices at 3:10 p.m.

The 125cc race will take place at Noon on Sunday. Moto2’s race is at 1:15 p.m.
