NORTH VERMILLION SECTIONAL: Twenty years in the waiting

Panthers are sectional champs

CAYUGA — The Super Bowl came to a new city. A presidential election was ongoing. And Riverton Parke won a girls basketball sectional.

All of these things happened in 1992 (replace an Indianapolis Super Bowl with Minneapolis). And they happened again in 2012.

Riverton Parke finished the Class A North Vermillion Sectional championship game against North Vermillion with an 8-0 run as the Panthers earned a 53-44 victory.

While it was Riverton Parke’s first basketball sectional championship in two decades, the core group of Panthers who won it are no strangers to success. Riverton Parke won the Class A volleyball sectional in October 2011 and has been successful in softball as well.

But to break through in basketball was a sweet reward for the Panthers.

“It’s amazing. I can’t ask for better teammates at all,” said an emotional Paige Yando, who led the Panthers with 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Sara Dickey added 11 for Riverton Parke, six of the points scored in the final period. Taylor Turchi paced North Vermillion with 14 points. North Vermillion’s Darby Martin had a monster game with 13 points and 19 rebounds.

It was the third time Riverton Parke defeated North Vermillion this season, but like the Panthers’ 57-55 overtime victory on Jan. 5, this one wasn’t easy.

Both teams came out tentative to start the game. Both had five turnovers and shot 3 of 11 in the opening quarter. It resulted in a 9-all deadlock.

The Falcons came out strong to start the second quarter, finishing off a 10-2 run started in the first quarter, as North Vermillion led 15-11. Darby Martin scored six of the Falcons’ points in the rally.

Undaunted, Riverton Parke switched for a time to man defense and it flustered the Falcons. The Panthers also cut down on their turnovers.

“We switch defenses up a lot. It depends on what we’re doing. We will switch from zone to man,” Sara Dickey said.

Sheldan Falls lit the spark for Riverton Parke with a pair of threes to put the Panthers back in front 17-15. After Turchi tied it, Riverton Parke’s defense and shooting blossomed into full flower. A 9-0 run put the Panthers in front 26-17 and Riverton Parke led 26-20 at halftime.

The Falcons (18-6) showed gumption and punched back. A 7-2 run midway through the third quarter put the Falcons back in front 34-33 with 3:08 to go.

Riverton Parke answered with a 10-2 run that continued into the fourth quarter. North Vermillion had no field goals in that span as the Panthers took a 43-35 lead.

Once again, the Falcons counter-punched. A 9-2 run brought North Vermillion within a point with 4:02 left in the game.

Riverton Parke’s defense then carried the Panthers home. North Vermillion would not score again, while the Panthers would score in transition against the tiring Falcons, who played its five starters for nearly the entire contest.

“I think in the end, we were into them the whole night and they were into us. I think we were able to wear them down,” Riverton Parke coach Josh Douglass said.

Riverton Parke (21-4) will play in the first game of the Class A Tri-Central Regional next Saturday against either Blue River or Randolph Southern.

“For the school, this is great. These girls represent our school in such a great way. We’re building leaders for the community,” Douglass said.
