‘Frustrated’ Sycamores regroup to face Southern Illinois

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State’s men’s basketball struggles have hit one Sycamore senior hard.

Dwayne Lathan has three weeks left in an ISU career that has been dynamic at times and frustrating at others. After ISU’s 68-60 loss at last-place Bradley on Wednesday, ISU is frustrated anew. And Lathan doesn’t like the tone that he and his fellow seniors have set. He hopes it changes for today’s 1 p.m. home game against Southern Illinois in Hulman Center.

“We’re leaders on this team and I haven’t done a great job of that,” Lathan said.

No loss has hit the Sycamores quite as hard as Wednesday’s defeat did. To a person, it was thought that the Sycamores’ effort was not where it needed to be, and no player ever wants to admit that lack of effort or leadership contributed to a loss.

“Everybody’s frustrated. I feel like it’s a job of me and my fellow leaders to set the tone. I have to do better. Myself, the rest of the seniors and Jake Odum, we have to get this team going and fight harder,” Lathan said.

ISU coach Greg Lansing agreed. He told the team after the loss that the fate of the Sycamores will be on the shoulders of the four seniors (Lathan, Carl Richard, Jordan Printy and Myles Walker) and sophomore Jake Odum.

“I told the starters after the game, ‘We’re going to sink or swim with you guys. Either start competing, we’ll get better, and make a little run or it won’t be good.’ That effort at Bradley is not what it takes,” Lansing said.

Lansing was glad to see Lathan take ownership, but is still disturbed by what transpired Wednesday.

“I just shake my head at [the loss]. I’m glad they recognize [leadership is needed], Dwayne as much as anybody. He’s tried what the coaches tell them to do; he’s come a long way. He’s trying to get these other guys on board,” Lansing said.

“[On Wednesday], we had nothing. We had no competitiveness. We didn’t have any enthusiasm. It was one you don’t want to think about.”

Like ISU, SIU is 5-9 in MVC. The teams are tied for eighth place. The Salukis won their previous encounter 73-67 Jan. 13 at Carbondale, Ill. Power forward Mamadou Seck (12.4 points, 8 rebounds) is the Salukis’ rock.

“They’re going to be a pressure defense. That’s their M.O. We have to handle that. We didn’t handle it very well at Bradley because that’s what they did to us,” Lansing said.
