South girls looking for solid performances at swimming state finals

SULLIVAN — One individual and one relay team, which includes that same individual, will represent Terre Haute South in the IHSAA girls swimming state finals today and possibly Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The top 16 athletes in each swimming event during today’s preliminaries will return to compete Saturday, with the top eight individuals vying for state championships. Those finishing nine through 16 in each event today will make up the competitors in the consolation heats Saturday.

South junior Grace Padget is seeded 16th out of 32 swimmers in the 100-yard backstroke. In last Saturday’s Plainfield Sectional, she broke the school record and won the event with a time of 58.49 seconds.

This will be Padget’s second state-finals appearance in the 100 backstroke. In 2011, she placed 23rd.

“Top 16 make it back [Saturday] for the finals,” Padget told the Tribune-Star, “so that’s my goal.”

“Once a swimmer has a breakthrough like Grace had last Saturday, that kinda opens the floodgates for great things to happen,” South coach Jeff Thompson assessed. “I also think that performance gave Grace the confidence in herself that I’ve had in her for a long time.”

Also trying today to qualify for the top-16 finals Saturday will be the Braves’ 200-yard medley relay foursome of Padget, senior Sarah Senseman, senior Mercedez Bray and sophomore Katherine Senseman. That group, which finished second in the sectional with a time of 1:50.32, is seeded 22nd out of 32.

“We have a lot of room to improve,” assessed Thompson, who thinks the group could drop one more second from its best time this weekend. “The girls are not going to the state meet to celebrate a season. They’re going to the state meet to drop more time and I think they’ll do it.”

“If we can drop time, I think we have a very good chance of making it back for [Saturday’s] finals,” Padget added.

All diving will take place Saturday, with the top 21 of 32 competitors advancing from the morning prelims to the semifinals after five dives each. After three dives each in the semis, the top 16 will move on to the afternoon final round for another three dives each.
