RAMBLIN' RECK: Just my two cents worth

TERRE HAUTE — Nobody asked me but:

After two preseason games, it appears the Indianapolis Colts will be a better team once the regular-season games begin.

Being better may not translate into lots of victories, but the Colts should be more competitive than 2011 with Peyton Manning on the sidelines.

Andrew Luck has looked good for a rookie in the first two games. Following both of his interceptions on Sunday, he directed the team to touchdowns on the next possession. The Colts played well enough to win in hostile territory but finally lost on a late field goal.

They’ll continue their preseason play on Saturday against Washington.

Manning, meanwhile, played one half for Denver against Seattle last week. He completed 16 of 23 passes for 177 yards with two interceptions in the Broncos’ 20-10 defeat.

In another game, Jay Cutler saw his first action for the Chicago Bears against Seattle, completing 7 of 13 passes for 122 yards in his team’s 33-31 victory.

Elsewhere, the New York Jets have scored nine whole points in their first two games.

n Tom-Cattin’ It — Princeton ended a 29-game losing streak in high school football with a 42-34 victory over Wood Memorial.

Five Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference teams were winners in their openers, with Ben Davis beating Indianapolis Cathedral 24-21 in one big one.

n Western Indiana Conference volleyball teams competed in a round-robin event at West Vigo last week. Brown County finished 2-0 with victories over Edgewood and the host team.

n Former Clay City coach and teacher Keith Jones has been named athletic assistant at the school. He will assist the athletic director, Robert Boltinghouse — who also is assistant principal — with some duties.

n Purdue’s men’s basketball team went 3-1 on a tour of Italy.

n Former Boston Red Sox player Johnny Pesky has died at 92. He played shortstop for the Bosox in the 1940s and 1950s, teaming with second baseman Bobby Doerr, and hitting over .300 in six of his seven full seasons.

n Former IUPUI basketball player Alex Young will play in Italy.

n Ben Davis senior Tony Wills says he will attend Illinois State. He averaged 15.2 points as a junior.

n Adam Schenk of Knox County won his first match in the U.S. Amateur, then lost a 21-hole match to one of the top players.

n Since it was done on the weekend with a lot of activity, some fans did not notice Houston fired manager Brad Mills and named Tony DeFrancesco interim manager. He had been managing the team’s Triple-A team at Oklahoma City.

  • South wins first half of doubleheader against Lawrence North

    Host Terre Haute South kept its Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference high school baseball title hopes alive — and clinched no worse than second place in the process — by downing Lawrence North 4-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night.
    The second game, which started after Senior Night festivities between games, ended past the Tribune-Star deadline.

    Momentum was the only thing riding on Indiana State’s baseball game against Bradley on Friday. With a five-game winning streak going, ISU wanted to keep the good vibes going into next week’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
    ISU couldn’t do it.

  • PREP ROUNDUP: Calleja pitches West Vigo past South Vermillion

    Brandon Calleja had 13 strikeouts to lead West Vigo to a 5-1 victory against South Vermillion in high school baseball Friday.
    Brandon Behringer went 2 for 4 with two RBI for the Vikings, who secured second place in the Western Indiana Conference.
    Kaden Lawson had double for South Vermillion (15-7), which finished 4-2 in the WIC.

    When Tyler Seibert returned to the Terre Haute South track and field lineup Thursday for sectional action at Terre Haute North, it was like the midseason trade the Cubs made for Sutcliffe that earned them a playoff spot.
