METRO ROUNDUP: TH North’s Curley among trio of ISU track recruits

Indiana State men’s track and field coach John McNichols announced the signing of three recruits to national letters-of -intent to compete in the 2012-2013 season.

Connor Curley, a pole-vaulter from Terre Haute North; Derek Bunch, a thrower from Mahomet-Seymour (Ill.); and Michael Simon, a middle-distance runner from Springfield (Ill.) High School; have signed to compete for the Sycamores.

Curley recently broke the school’s outdoor record by clearing 15 feet, 6 inches, which ranked as the best height in Indiana and 58th nationally. He has a personal-best height indoors of 15-3 set at the 2012 Terre Haute North HSR.

“Once again we have an outstanding local athlete who is one of the best pole vaulters in the state,” McNichols said. “He has lots of potential with a good technical base from the coaches that he has had.”

Curley placed 19th at the 2011 state track and field meet, second at the sectional and fourth at the regional. He is one of the favorites to take the 2012 state title. The Terre Haute North athlete also has competed in the 200 meters (25.19), 400 meters (55.37), discus (98-81⁄2) and high jump (6-10).

Bunch threw a personal best distance of 57-11 in winning shot put at the Danville Boys Quadrangular in April which ranked as the fifth best in Illinois this year and 64th nationally. He also has a personal best distance of 152-9 in the discus.

Simon won the 2011 state outdoor championship in the 800 with a time of 1:55.82 and won the Central States 8 title in 1:57.12. He also ran the opening leg of the 4x800 relay team that won the state title in 2010 and finished fourth at state in the 400 as a freshman. He also competed in cross country with a fourth-place finish in the 2009 state finals and a 13th-place finish at the 2010 state championships.
