Rex on a Roll

Team on a 4-game win streak entering series with division-leading Bombers

TERRE HAUTE — Good pitching and timely hitting served the Terre Haute Rex well in extending their longest winning streak of the season to four games on Sunday.

Kyle Zimmerman supplied the bulk of the pitching, and the Rex offense scored in five different innings to defeat Quincy 7-1 in a Prospect League baseball game in front of 950 fans at Bob Warn Field.

Zimmerman nearly went the distance, scattering six hits over 81⁄3 innings, leaving the game after making 129 pitches. Josh Dove, a Terre Haute South graduate, finished off the final two outs.

“Tremendous effort … looked like [Zimmerman] had a chance for a shutout when he went into the ninth, almost got our first complete game,” Rex manager Brian Dorsett said. “Josh Dove shut the door. Nice to see him get his opportunity, local kid. Really came in with some heat today.”

The Rex’s first two runs came on bases-loaded walks in the second inning, just like in the ninth inning the night before to win the opener of this weekend series in “walk”-off fashion.

Patrick Chandler made it 3-0 with a long home to right, the ball leaving the park just under the scoreboard. Later on, Michael Schroeder drove in a run with double (fifth), Alex Reynolds drove in two runs with a double (sixth), and Chandler added an RBI-single (seventh).

As a late substitute, Terre Haute North graduate and Indiana State player Michael Eberle was hit by a pitch, had a double and scored a run.

“We did leave some runners in scoring position, we left guys at second and third a couple times with less than two outs,” Dorsett said. “Yet we came back and took advantage of some things with two outs, scored some runs.”

With some needed momentum, the Rex (13-11) play first-place Dubois County four times in their seven games remaining in the first half, beginning with their next game at home on Tuesday.

“We’re in the thick of the [first-half] race … I like our chances,” Dorsett noted. “We’ve just got to continue to play like this, put a little pressure on [Dubois County], It’s kind of nice to be in the spot we’re in right now.”

Notes — Brandon Dorsett was the winning pitcher for the Bluefield BlueJays in his professional debut late Saturday night.

A former Rex, Indiana State and Terre Haute North player, the younger Dorsett entered Bluefield’s home game vs. Johnson City in the eighth inning with a 4-3 lead.

Dorsett allowed an unearned run in the eighth, then pitched a scoreless ninth, earning the victory as Bluefield plated a run in the bottom of the ninth to win, 5-4, in walk-off fashion.

“Getting a win in his first outing, it doesn’t come any sweeter than that,” Brian Dorsett said. “[Brandon] was really high on the feeling he was having. We’re overly elated for him.”

Dorsett was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Toronto BlueJays soon after Major League Baseball’s player draft earlier this month.

  • Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville

Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.
