College report: North grad Mayhew is second team all-American at IU

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana University running standout Zach Mayhew of Terre Haute North was honored earlier this month as a second-team All-American by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Mayhew got the Hoosiers off to a solid start on day one at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, taking 14th in the 10,000 meters to claim All-America honors for the first time in his career.

Mayhew clocked a time of 29:43.79 in his first appearance at an NCAA Championships in track and field. The junior became the first All-American in IU history in the 10,000 meters.

Mayhew advanced to NCAAs by taking 10th in 30:26.10 in the preliminary round.

He has run at the national meet in cross country the past two seasons.

Earlier, Mayhew had dominated the 10K event at the Big Ten Championships, getting the school’s first-ever win in the 10K, and he broke the University of Wisconsin’s McClimon Complex record in the process.

Mayhew dropped Wisconsin’s Elliot Krause with 300 meters to go, pulling away steadily to the victory. His time of 28:55.06 is nearly 30 seconds better than the previous facility record and was more than four seconds ahead of Krause in second place. His time is the fourth-fastest in IU history, shedding nearly 25 seconds off his previous career mark.

The first Big Ten Champion in IU history in the 10,000 meters, Mayhew becomes the fifth member of IU’s distance corps with a Big Ten crown.
