METRO ROUNDUP: Sonic Braves open tourney with win

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute Sonic Braves defeated Indy Thrashers 15-0 to open play in the Rose-Hulman College Tour 15U/16U baseball tournament Friday.

Leading the Sonic Braves was Marvin Pitt going 2 for 3 with two runs scored, three RBIs and was the winning pitcher. Jared Wolfe, Mitchell Clinkenbeard, Ryan Millsap and Mark Drake had two RBIs apiece.

The Sonic Braves (23-8), a continuation of the South freshman team, will play next at 8 a.m. today at the Terre Haute Men’s Senior League Ballpark. The 12-team tourney runs through Sunday.

n Babe Ruth championship — At Riley, The Volkers Group defeated Bob Bowen Ford 11-6 in the Riley Babe Ruth championship game Thursday.

Highlights — For The Volkers Group, Evan Poole had a double and 3 runs scored; Nathan Biggs had 2 hits and 2 RBI; Andrew Knight had 3 hits and 4 RBI; and Brock Daniel had a double and 2 RBI. For Bob Bowen Ford, Kavan Crowell had 2 hits and an RBI; Justin Wilson had 2 RBI; Josh Robinson had 2 hits; and Ethan Hunter reached base 3 times, scoring 2 runs.

Volleyball

n COA team in finals — At Orlando, Fla., COA 12 Red has reached the championship bracket of the Amateur Athletic Union national tournament and will finish at least ninth in the nation.

On Friday, the Terre Haute team beat South Florida VBC from Miami and previously unbeaten Queens Kuilan from Puerto Rico, both in two games, and lost in three games to AVA Rox from Houston, but won the tiebreaker to become pool champions. Earlier victories came over teams from South Carolina, Texas, Florida and Louisiana.

Championship-bracket play begins at 9 a.m. today against another Puerto Rican team.

Auto racing

n Cooper, Shuman win — At Putnamville, Marty Cooper and Casey Shuman were winners on Thursday’s race card at Lincoln Park Speedway.

Cooper won his heat and the main event for super stocks and Shuman was first in the feature for sprint cars.

Regular racing is slated for tonight at the track.

    Cindy and Mark Wilguess are the inspiration behind the Taghleef Team. Cindy herself fought this battle with cancer and won. Last year she led her team to be the No. 1 fundraisers in the Relay for Life.

  • Carpenter arrives as Indy 500 threat

    And the crowd went wild.
    Not only did Ed Carpenter win the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, he is the hometown son. Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now.

  • Carpenter wins Indy 500 pole

     Ed Carpenter is on the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.
    The native of Marshall, Ill., earned the No. 1 spot for the May 26 race with a strong run in the Fast Nine competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. He is the first American driver on the pole since 2006.
