Sinclair, Parker, Vukovits to be inducted into WVFCA Hall of Fame

All-Star banquet a banquet kicks off All-Star weekend

TERRE HAUTE — A limited number of tickets are still available for this evening’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Banquet in Hulman Center, and demand from east-central Illinois is said to be high.

That’s because two of the three WVFCA Hall of Fame inductees tonight are Little Illini Conference legends: Dick Parker, from the 1970s Marshall Lions powerhouse, and Keith Sinclair, whose final Casey game was a loss at the Class 2A state finals back in November.

Joining them in the 2012 induction class is Dan Vukovits who, unlike Parker and Sinclair, is not yet officially retired. A head coach for 16 years at Rockville, he was also an assistant coach for Jay Barrett there prior to becoming a head coach and has remained in the Barrett coaching tree since as a volunteer coach with Chris Barrett at Terre Haute North and Greg Barrett at North Putnam. With Greg Barrett returning to the Cougars, Vukovits is tentatively planning to help there on a limited basis again this fall.

Banquet begins at 6 p.m. today in Hulman Center. Ted Karras, coach at Marian University, will be the keynote speaker and the 2012 WVFCA all-stars will also be recognized. Tickets are $30 each and can still be purchased by calling Tom Jones at (812) 878-4572.

Parker is a graduate of Eastern Illinois, where he was a three-year letterwinner for the Panthers and later served on their coaching staff. He coached at Mahomet-Seymour for several years; earned a doctorate at the University of Illinois, helping on the football staff there will doing so; and was head coach at North Central College for two years.

He became the head coach at Marshall in 1972 and was there for eight seasons, winning five LIC championships. His 1979 team went 11-1, winning playoff games against Christopher and East St. Louis Assumption before losing to eventual Class 2A state champion Decatur St. Teresa.

The 1980s in east-central Illinois became more of a Casey decade, with Sinclair taking over as the Warriors’ head coach and leading his team to a Class 2A runner-up finish in 1982, playoff appearances in 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1989 and the 1985 Class 2A state-championship victory over Woodstock Marian that capped a perfect 14-0 season.

In two separate stints as Casey’s head coach that totaled 27 years and 236 victories, Sinclair’s teams remained a force to be reckoned with. His final game was his fourth in the championship contest and his teams enjoyed nine unbeaten regular seasons and a 46-game regular-season winning streak. Casey’s football field is named after him and his longtime assistant coach Gene Vidoni — a pretty good bet to join Sinclair in the WVFCA Hall of Fame before long.

Vukovits joined Jay Barrett’s staff at Rockville in 1982 and his four seasons under that Hall of Famer included a 10-0 season in 1984. Head coach of the Rox from 1986 to 2001, Vukovits’ teams won 85 games, two sectional titles and four Wabash River Conference crowns. Working under his second generation of Barretts, Vukovits was part of the staff for North Putnam’s 2010 Class 2A state runner-up team.

The 2012 WVFCA All-Star Game is 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Under a new format this season, the game will be played between Gold and Black teams rather than as North vs. South.

The Gold team, coached by Steve Weber of Linton, will include players from Terre Haute North, Casey, Cumberland, Mattoon, North Knox, North Putnam, North Vermillion, Oblong, Olney, Palestine-Hutsonville, Paris, Robinson, Rockville, Sullivan, Tri-County and Turkey Run in addition to the Miners.

Coach Troy Burgess of South Putnam will be in charge of the Black team which has players from Terre Haute South, West Vigo, Northview, Cascade, Charleston, Cloverdale, Edgewood, Greencastle, Lawrenceville, Marshall, North Central, North Daviess, Owen Valley, Red Hill, Riverton Parke and Union in addition to the Eagles.

Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.
