ISU women make memory of their own against second-place Creighton

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State women’s basketball team made a memory of its own against Creighton on Friday at Hulman Center.

The Bluejays — who were second-place in the Missouri Valley Conference with just one loss — had fallen just four times this season and led the nation in 3-point shots made per game.

But Creighton had no answer for ISU’s stopping power.

The Bluejays converted just 22.8 percent of their shots, including a meager 15.4 percent in the first half, as ISU’s defensive clampdown resulted in a 58-41 victory. It was the lowest point total ISU has allowed since a 40-35 victory over Liberty in 2010.

“There’s been some magic this week that has happened to both the men’s and women’s teams in here. We both did such a tremendous job on the Bluejays,” said ISU coach Teri Moren, referring to the 76-57 victory by the ISU men over No. 16 Creighton on Wednesday.

Taylor Whitley led ISU with 14 points. Marina Laramie had her first career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The victory got ISU (13-8, 5-5) back to .500 in MVC play and gave the Sycamores a quality win over an opponent that had previously lost only to larger conference powers and league-leader Wichita State.

“It was just a great team effort, a great team win. I’ve never beaten Creighton since I’ve been here, so we’re excited. We worked hard to prepare for them,” Whitley said.

ISU never allowed Creighton (16-5, 8-2) to get into a comfort zone. The Bluejays made five 3-pointers — four below their average — and needed 27 attempts to get there.

There was nothing fancy about ISU’s man-to-man attack … the Sycamores just did it well.

“When we were on the road [a 69-50 ISU loss on Jan. 13], they got a bunch of open threes. We wanted them to put it on the floor and not shoot threes,” Whitley said.

For a while, it appeared neither team would hit a shot. Creighton led 12-10 with 10:06 to go in the first half. At the peak of the shooting drought, the Sycamores and Bluejays combined to make just 8 of 36 from the field.

With just under eight minutes to go in the first half, the Sycamores got untracked by going inside against Creighton’s four-guard lineup. Laramie, Racheal Mahan and Kasey Johnson all converted layups to get the Sycamores going.

“Their strength is their outside shooting and ours is our post game. We knew they’d double-down so we tried to get it inside, not only to create looks for us, but for our shooters,” Laramie said.

Creighton — the nation’s leader in 3-point shots made per game — never thawed. The Bluejays were 4-of-26 from the field in the first half.

With Creighton unable to produce anything, ISU went on an 18-0 run, despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the field in the first half. ISU’s lead peaked at 16 and it settled for a 28-14 halftime advantage.

“They played their rear ends off,” Moren said. “One of the things I hear Greg [Lansing, ISU men’s coach] say a lot is that they’re really good when they fly around defensively. That was the case for us tonight,” Moren said.

Creighton’s woes extended to the second half. ISU shot 40 percent in the second half, which helped keep the Bluejays at arm’s length. The closest Creighton would get is an 11-point deficit.

ISU next plays host to Drake on Sunday.
