PREP/METRO ROUNDUP: Wildcats lose to Cougars

ROACHDALE — Kaden Lawson had a game-high 25 points in boys high school basketball Saturday night, but host North Putnam had three double-figure scorers and came away with a 73-63 nonconference win.

Jake Haste had 20 points, Jameson Brewer 18 and Bennett Hazelgrove 16 for the Cougars. Tristan Spivey scored nine and Jordan Branz eight for the Wildcats.

• Plainfield 55, Northview 53 — At Plainfield, the host Quakers won in a battle of potential sectional opponents.

Northview is now 6-11 and hosts South Putnam on Thursday.

• North Vermillion 46, North Central 38 — At Cayuga, the host Falcons got their second win in as many nights to improve to 6-10 for the year.

North Central, 6-11, plays Thursday at Clay City. North Vermillion is at Riverton Parke that night.

• Cloverdale 52, Turkey Run 46 — At Cloverdale, coach Pat Rady picked up his 719th career win as the host Clovers won a nonconference game.

Turkey Run, 2-16, hosts Fountain Central on Thursday. Cloverdale, 5-12, plays at Southmont that night.

• Harrisburg 68, Casey 50 — At Benton, Ill., the Warriors lost to the No. 1-ranked Class 2A team on Saturday in the Benton Shootout.

Brandon Wolfe had 20 points to lead the Warriors and Matt McCown had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Casey won its sixth game in a row Friday night, defeating Edwards County 77-65. The Warriors are at home against Hutsonville-Palestine this Friday.

• Castle 82, Robinson 70 — At Newburgh, Ind., the Maroons lost the interstate battle.

Ranked 10th in Class 2A, Robinson is now 20-4.

• Streaks end streak — At Villa Grove, Ill., Martinsville defeated Villa Grove 51-48 on Friday to snap an 18-game losing streak in boys basketball.

Josh Mulkins led the winners with 18 points. Jake Vincent had 16 and Chris Lee scored a season-best 13. Martinsville will play Atwood-Hammond  on Tuesday.



Girls basketball

• Benton 62, Casey 42 — At Benton, Ill., the Warriors completed their regular season Saturday at the Benton Shootout.

Kyleigh Decker had 16 points and Taylor Birchfield 10 for the Warriors.

Auto racing

• Clauson completes sweep — At Peoria, Ariz., Bryan Clauson completed his sweep of U.S. Auto Club sprint car racing Saturday in the final day of the Winter Challenge at Canyon Speedway Park.

Clauson led all the way to win the 30-lap main event. He won all three features in the three-day event and edged Jon Stanbrough for the Winter Challenge title.
