Rockville pulls away to secure share of Wabash River Conference title

ROCKVILLE — Some first half foul trouble may have actually been the catalyst to top-ranked Rockville’s 55-37 win over Fountain Central Friday night.

The win allowed the Rockville to clinch at least a share of the Wabash River Conference title as the Rox are now 19-0 overall and 6-0 in the league.

Rockville had to play the final five minutes of the first half without Lane Mahurin, on the floor as he picked up his third foul with 4:56 to play. Still, the Rox managed to take a 27-20 lead into the halftime break, but because of the foul trouble Rockville changed its game plan.

“We were a little concerned about the foul situation so we decided we were going to go to the spread offense for the third quarter,” Rockville coach Dave Mahurin said. “Our goal was to use it for the third quarter, but they had trouble with it so we just decided to run it the entire second half.”

That strategy proved to be highly success as the seven-point halftime lead ballooned to a 14-point lead at the end of the third quarter and 19 points at the end of the game.

In the second half the Rox pretty much shot layups as was evident by its shooting percentage. Rockville hit 7 of 12 shots in the final half. It also converted on 13 of 17 free throws.

“This is a very tough place to play so we are very happy with the victory,” Mahurin said. “We did a lot of things right, but we counted three things we did wrong in the second half and those will be addressed. We even scored a couple of times we did something wrong and while the guys might think hat is OK tonight, down the road that could be the difference in a game.”

Despite sitting out that stretch in the first half, Mahurin led the Rox is scoring as he ended up just under his average. He tallied 19 points and entered the game averaging 20.

Joel Wittenmyer and Jordan McFall tallied 13 and 12 points to add to the cause.

Fountain Central was led by Ethan Woodrow who ended the game with 14 points. He was the only Mustangs to break into double figures.

The win was the 26th in the last 27 regular season games for the Rox. The 19-point win was also the closest any team in the WRC has come to beating Rockville his season. The previous closest game was a 21-point win against Covington.

Rockville will next play at West Vigo tonight. Fountain Central will play at Turkey Run on Thursday.

    The second game, which started after Senior Night festivities between games, ended past the Tribune-Star deadline.
