The action — The Terre Haute South Braves (8-10, 1-4 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) visit the Ben Davis Giants (10-4, 3-2 MIC) for South’s only game this weekend. The Braves are looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

The coaches — Scott Ridge is 16-25 in his second year at Terre Haute South. Mark James is 28-11 in his second year at Ben Davis and 466-241 in his 31st year overall.
Probable starting lineups — For South, 5-10 senior Kevaris Gregory, 6-0 senior Logan Steward and 6-2 senior Preston Tofaute at guards, 6-2 senior Jeffrey Turner at forward and 6-4 sophomore Timmy Herin at center.
For Ben Davis, 6-2 junior Mike Beaty, 5-8 Kendall Broome and 6-4 senior Tony Wills at guard, with 6-3 senior Deaire Tate and 6-6 sophomore Brennan Gillis at center.
Key reserves — For South, 5-11 G Connor Shipley, 5-11 senior Shane Stanley, 5-11 sophomore Spence Tofaute and 5-10 sophomore Jared Wolfe.
For Ben Davis, 6-3 senior Jordan King and 6-0 senior Jeff Wilson.
Team leaders — For South, Jeffrey Turner is one of the state’s top scorers, averaging 25.7 points while shooting 46.2 percent from the field. He’s also averaging 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals. Kevaris Gregory is averaging 10.9 points and 2.5 steals. Wills, an Illinois State recruit, leads the Giants in scoring.
Recent games — Ben Davis is coming off a 72-44 loss at Carmel. South is coming off a 50-39 loss to Terre Haute North.
Last meeting — Ben Davis won last season 76-64.
Coaches’ quotes — Ridge on the Giants: “They’re solid. All their losses are to MIC schools and Pike. They’re physical. They’re a strong team inside and out. Take care of the ball and play good defense.”
Ridge on the Braves: “We were tied or had a lead with three or four minutes to go [against North]. Similar to the Carmel game. We’ve got to put that fourth quarter together. We’ve been hanging in games then losing them at the end.”
“Sophmores Shipley and Spence Tofaute are both coming off injuries that they’ve been playing through so we expect them to increase their production. They’ve been playing through it, but I think they’re ready to step up into more of a role.”
James on the Braves: “Terre Haute South is much improved from where they were earlier in the year. Turner plays at a high level and the other kids on the team just keep getting better.”
James on his team: “On the other had, we are not playing well right now. We hope to make this a competitive game. We did not compete last week as Carmel drilled us by 28 points.”

The action — Indianapolis North Central’s ninth-ranked Panthers (10-4, 3-1 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference) come to Terre Haute today to face North’s Patriots (10-6, 1-2) in a conference game. On Saturday, the Patriots travel to Evansville to face another group of Panthers, these from Reitz (10-6 going into tonight’s game at Jeffersonville).
The time — Tonight’s varsity tipoff is approximately 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the varsity game should begin at 8 p.m. EST.
The airwaves — No broadcasts are scheduled.
The coaches — Doug Mitchell is 338-137 in his 20th season at Indianapolis North Central. Todd Woelfle is 73-43 in his fifth year at Terre Haute North. Michael Adams is 247-192 in his 20th season at Reitz, 306-204 in his 23rd season overall.
Probable starting lineups — Possible starters for North Central are 5-4 senior Wade Stallings and 6-2 freshman Eron Gordon in backcourt with 6-8 junior Perry Poindexter, 6-6 senior Chandler Rowe and 6-6, 285-pound senior Darius Latham up front. Latham is an Indiana University football recruit; Gordon is the younger brother of former IU basketball star Eric Gordon, currently with the New Orleans Hornets.
North’s starters are expected to be 6-5 seniors Calvin Blank and Austin Lewis up front, 6-2 senior Steven Davis and 5-10 senior Nate Jahn in backcourt, with the fifth starter either 6-5 senior Patrick Hart or 5-11 senior Casey Vickers.
Possible starters for Reitz are 6-1 sophomore Jaylen Sanford and 5-11 senior Kameron Malone in backcourt with 6-1 senior Alex Stein, 6-2 sophomore Nate Hansen and either 6-3 junior Logan Worthington or 6-3 junior Jordan Summers up front. A usual starter for the Panthers, 6-0 sophomore Mario Barnes, is out with an injury.
Key reserves — For North Central: 6-4 junior Michael Loggan, 6-2 sophomore Aaron Banks, 5-10 junior Jeff Harris, 5-8 sophomore Wes Stowers and 6-5 freshman Antonio Singleton. Senior Collin Bridgeforth is unavailable for this week’s game.
For North: 6-2 senior A.J. Grady, 6-0 senior Charles Dillahunt and 6-2 seniors Chris Schenck and Evan Low.
For Reitz: 6-0 sophomore Milik Higgins and 5-11 freshman Blake Ruckman.
Team leaders — Gordon leads North Central in scoring at 18.7 points per game, with Latham averaging 16.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and Poindexter 10.5 points and 6.8 rebounds. Blank and Lewis both average in double figures for North. Sanford is the leader of a balanced attack for Reitz.
Recent games — North Central’s only game last weekend was a 69-62 win over Warren Central. North’s only game was a 50-39 win over Terre Haute South. Reitz played twice last week, losing 85-78 to Evansville Central but beating Floyd Central 74-56.
Last meeting — North lost 68-48 to North Central last year, but won 62-48 the following night against Reitz. The Patriots haven’t beaten North Central since a 59-57 decision on Feb. 4, 2005, while Reitz had a 52-50 win over North on Feb. 23, 2011.
Coaches’ quotes — Woelfle on the Patriots: “Austin Lewis did a really good job on [Jeffrey] Turner defensively [against South], and I was pleased with our composure in the fourth quarter [of that game]; we were able to get to the free throw line, we hit those free throws and we iced the game.”
Mitchell on his Panthers: “We’ve won something like seven of eight against really tough competition. Nothing’s been easy; our four losses were all against top-10 teams and some of those you get and some you don’t. But we’re heading in the right direction.”
Woelfle on the weekend: “North Central is very athletic and skilled, and Evansville Reitz is one of our more extensive scouts of the year because they run multiple sets and they execute very well.”
Mitchell on the Patriots: “They just won’t go away. They’re a really good ball-control team and good at keeping control of their tempo. It will be a battle of wills.”
Adams on his Panthers: “Our schedule is just brutal, but we’ve been competitive in every game. There have been a lot of positives, but we’ve got to be able to finish the deal against good teams.”
Adams on the Patriots: “The league they play in is really, really good, so they’ll be a challenge for us. They’re a good team and a good program.”

The action — The West Vigo Vikings (8-8) will play host to the Class A No. 1-ranked Rockville Rox (18-0 before tonight’s game at Fountain Central) for a nonconference clash Saturday night. West Vigo will be celebrating its homecoming this weekend.
The time — Varsity tipoff is slated for about 7:30.
The airwaves — No broadcasts planned in the Wabash Valley.
The coaches — Dave Mahurin is 158-79 in his 10th year at Rockville and 283-221 in his 23rd year overall before tonight, while Joe Boehler is 62-47 in his fifth season at West Vigo.

We’re going to try to focus on ourselves this Saturday night and try to be a better basketball team.”
Boehler on playing the Rox: “Obviously, they’re one of the best teams in the state. I think they have the best record in the state — 18-0 — possibly 19-0 by Saturday. They’ve got very good players who know their role perfectly. Lane Mahurin is a future college basketball player … does so much for their team. He’s a difficult matchup for anybody.”
Dave Mahurin on his squad: “Being 18-0, it’s hard to get too upset. There’s still some things we need to get better at, though. We have to get mentally tougher. We take some possessions off defensively every now and then.”

Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now. -

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
