PREP ROUNDUP: Knights never trail in winning Big 4 title

Tribune-Star staff report
----

BRAZIL, Ind. — Host Northview went from an 0-3 Big 4 Tournament performance in high school baseball a year ago to winning the championship late Saturday night, downing Terre Haute South 6-4 in the championship game.

The Braves, who beat Terre Haute North on Friday and West Vigo earlier Saturday, finished with a 2-1 tournament record. Northview has played just two Big 4 games — and has its final one today against West Vigo, the makeup of a postponement last week — but can do no worse than 2-1 and has the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Knights never trailed in the championship game, using a double by Craig Peters and a run-scoring single by Connor Pierce to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

South got a run in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring hit by Spencer Whitlock, but Northview starter Coleman Craig settled down and held South scoreless the next three innings.

Northview had a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but South rallied. Brock Wheeler, the third Northview pitcher in that inning, halted South’s rally and held the Braves scoreless the rest of the way to earn his fifth save of the season.

That tied the Northview school record that had been set by current Knights coach Scott McDonald.
