Torpedoes swim in several state meets

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Torpedoes recently wrapped up their short-course season by competing in three state meets during March: the Senior State, Age Group State and Masters.

Indiana Swimming Age Group State, comprised of swimmers 14 and under, was conducted at the IUPUI Natatorium on March 16-18.

The THT boys finished 3rd overall while the THT club took eighth place overall.

The THT 13-14 boys dominated all the relays giving them four state championships. The relay team included Dalton Mitchell, Chandler Bray, Collin Dowell, Connor McCord and Jacob Riley. The 10 & under boys 200 yard medley relay team, comprised of Blayze Kimble, Elijah Riley, Jackson Breitweiser and Maverick Bray took 8th place in the state.

Additional relay teams included swimmers Hayden Mattick, Mary Gattrell, Karoline Fairbanks, Madelyn Schilling, Maria Kline, Heidi Mattick, Rachel Senseman, Abby Kirsch, Emily Thompson, Hannah Cervantes, Brittney Scott, Alayna Moore, Genevive Eldred, Alia Sarris, Tamia Phillipi, Koby Powers, Tanner Gage, James Mandeville, Seth Bayless, Michael Deckerd, Sam Wilson, Michael Crowell, Ben Allen, Will Cammack, Forrest Gattrell and Sam McCarter.

Fourteen-year-old Dalton Mitchell also brought home two state championships in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke. Mitchell also placed 2nd in the 200 individual medley, the 100 free and the 200 free as well as fourth in the 400 individual medley.

Chandler Bray, another 13-14 age group swimmer, was 2nd in the 200 yard breastroke. He also placed third in the 100 breast, fifth in the 100 back, seventh in the 200 back, seventh in the 400 individual medley and eighth in the 200  individual medley.

Ten-year-old Blayze Kimble also walked away with three second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley, 50 breastroke and the 100 free. Kimble also had three third-place finishes in the 200 free, 100 breastroke and the 50 free.

Other top 16 individual finishes included a 16th-place finish for Maria Kline in the 1,650 free; an 11th- and 12th-place finish for Connor McCord in the 100 and 200 butterfly; and a 14th-place finish for Tamia Phillipi in the 50 breast. Elijah Riley took 10th in the 200 frees, 12th in the 100 frees and 15th in both the 50 and 100 back.

Indiana Swimming Senior State, conducted March 9-11 at the IUPUI Natatorium, saw the success of several local high school swimmers. Competing were Grace Padget, Mercedez Bray, Katherine Senseman, Alexandra Nichols, Rachel Senseman, Maria Kline, VJ Sakbun, Josh Ford, Collin McCord, Christian Wilhelm, Nolan Roach and Dalton Mitchell. The boys relay team broke four out of five THT relay records. Top-16 individual results included an 11th-place finish for Grace Padget in the 200 back as well as a 10th-place finish in the 100 back. Katherine Senseman placed 14th in the 200 back and Nolan Roach took 10th place in both the 100 breast and 50 free.

The THT Master swimmers, an adult program, participated in the Greater Indiana Masters State Meet March 24-25 at Indianapolis North Central High School. The THT women won first place in the small team division, while the men finished fourth. The THT Master swimmers finished second overall in the small-team division.

Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series.
