Different course greets sectional golfers

Postseason play is slated for high school boys golf teams in the area today.

Most of the teams in the area will compete in the Linton Sectional at the Phil Harris Course instead of Rolling Meadows where the sectional had been played in recent seasons.

Three teams and three players not on those teams will qualify for the regional to be played Thursday at Country Oaks in Daviess County.

Terre Haute South shot 290 to win the 2011 sectional followed by Terre Haute North with 299 and Linton with 317.

Going into today's action, Linton, North, South, Sullivan and Northview rate as the top five teams. Linton and North both had perfect records in nine-hole matches while South's defeats came against those two teams and a strong Greencastle team.

The host Miners are considered the team to beat by most of the other coaches for a couple reasons.

They will be playing on their home course where they shot a record 278 this season and have all five players back from last year's tournament: Clayton French, Cole Bradbury, Luke Jerrells, Ben Boyd and Koye Kaiser.

The Miners finished second to Vincennes Lincoln in the North Knox Invitational last week and ahead of Evansville North, shooting 297.

Kaiser carded 70 and won a playoff for medalist honors.

Sam Pollock and Grant Lewellyn are the North players back from last year and have been in the 2012 lineup along with Evan Perdiew, Andrew Behnke and Adam LaGrange.

The Patriots won the Terre Haute South Invitational and the Crawfordsville Invitational in addition to taking Vigo County honors and finishing third in the MIC tournament.

South does not have a player back from last year's sectional. The Braves took fourth in the MIC and placed a solid fourth in a tournament hosted by Franklin Central.

Its lineup has been made up of Luke Peoples, Ryan and Drew Cahill, Sam Mimms and Jon Payne. The Braves have played at the sectional course twice.

Derek Andre and freshman Nathan Pirtle have been leaders for Sullivan while Larry Knight and Dylan Nesty are returnees from last year for Northview.

Brandon Long and Nick Leek have been top players for West Vigo.

Greencastle finished 15-0 in nine-hole matches and won the Northview Invitational in addition to county and WCC titles.

The Tiger Cubs and Cloverdale will vie for honors in the Martinsville Sectional.
