2012 high school football preview: Senior domination could determine Bulldogs’ fate

More than half of Union’s 23-man roster is seniors

DUGGER — Asked about his high school football team’s speed recently, Todd Gambill of Union had an instructive answer.

“This is one of the faster teams we’ve had,” the veteran coach noted, “but it’s all relative to who you’re playing.”

Widen the scope of that answer and you’ve summed up the Bulldogs for the 2012 season: potentially one of the best teams they’ve had in quite a while, but maybe not a threat to the teams at the top of the Southwest Seven Conference.

Union has experience, particularly at the skill positions, and it has plenty of candidates for the line. The Bulldogs’ size is more than adequate.

But keep Gambill’s theory of relativity in mind. Union remains — and probably always will remain — the smallest public school in Indiana that plays football. There are a lot of candidates for the spots on the line because some of last season’s freshmen linemen were pressed into immediate service when some of the older Bulldogs got hurt.

And with just 23 players on the roster, injuries could have the same effect they did last year, when a 2-1 start turned into a 2-8 season. “Injuries are always a big thing for us,” Gambill said.

When healthy, however, the Bulldogs are a threat, with a backfield full of potential standouts.

Quarterback Sterling Langley is the key to the offense, Gambill said. “He can run or throw,” the coach noted. “We’ll spread it out and give him some options.”

Returning running backs are Mike Foglesong and Trey Snead, while Darrell Faulkner is a receiver who will also get some carries and Ethan Secrest is another returning receiver. Standouts on the line are expected to be Hunter Swan (6-foot-4, 210), Jerod Reynolds (5-10, 230) and Dakota Brown (6-4, 270).

All those players are seniors, by the way. Twelve of the 23 Bulldogs are.

“They’re the backbone of our team, obviously,” Gambill said, a little reluctant to look to future Bulldog teams. “If we had 50 [players, having 12 seniors] wouldn’t be too bad.”

Swan and Brown were two of the players who went down with injuries a year ago, inadvertently creating some line depth for this season. Senior Dalton Chubb, junior Blake Camden and a quartet of sophomores — Dakota Chesterfield (6-4, 220), Ralee Mesey, Luke Manuel and Josh Rooksberry — are also in the running for playing time.

“All the freshmen last year got to play,” Gambill pointed out.

The team is well fortified at tight end with senior Wes Inman — he’s also the backup quarterback — and sophomore Austin Robertson (6-6, 205). Other wide receivers available are senior Chris Simmerman and a football newcomer, 6-4 junior basketball player Ian Hamburg.

Another football newcomer, junior Marissa Abrams — yes, that’s a girl — will try to find a spot in the defensive backfield, but otherwise most of the Bulldogs on offense will wind up on defense at some time or another. That probably includes this year’s freshmen — Brad Pedro, Skylar Mesey and future quarterback Anthony Ellis — too.

“We get everybody involved as much as possible,” Gambill said. Foglesong is expected to be the kicker, Faulkner the punter.

“With this group of seniors, expectations are higher,” Gambill concluded.

Relatively speaking, that is.
