MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota evened the weekend college baseball series with Indiana State by recording a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Ben Meyer pitched the complete game for the Gophers, striking out 11, walking none and allowing five hits.
Devin Moore took the loss for ISU, giving up two runs and five hits in a six-inning stint. Kurt Kudrecki allowed a run and two hits in the final two innings.
Minnesota bunched four of its hits off Moore to score twice in the bottom of the third, then added its finaI run in the seventh.
Meyer allowed Sycamore runners to reach second base just twice. Freshman Taylor Steen was 2 for 3 for the Sycamores, his first ISU hits.
The rubber game of the series between the 6-7 Sycamores and 12-7 Minnesota is at 1 p.m. today.
On Friday, ISU starting pitcher Sean Manaea rolled his ankle while celebrating ISU’s win over the Gophers. According to ISU’s sports information staff, Manaea’s injury is not believed to be serious. He is day-to-day and is still expected to start next Friday when ISU opens Missouri Valley Conference play at home against Southern Illinois.
* DePauw tops Rose-Hulman — On Friday, DePauw scored three runs in the top of the eighth to defeat the Engineers 7-6, coming back from an early 5-1 deficit.
Bobby Newman had two hits and three RBIs and Patrick Klima, Donald Stopka and Donnie Waters added two hits each for Rose. Ben Menich left with a lead after pitching seven innings, giving up four runs and 11 hits.
The Engineers (3-7) return to action with an 11 a.m. matchup against DePauw and a 5 p.m. matchup with Concordia Chicago on Saturday.
* Marshall 2, East Central 0 — At Broadlands, Ill., Marshall opened its 2013 high school season by getting a one-hit shutout from K.J. Rogers and Austin Osborn.
Rogers struck out 10 in five innings and Osborn struck out four in the last two innings. Adam Kendall had two doubles, the only Marshall hits.

Basketball
* Craft wins Elks Hoop Shoot — Rachel Craft of Terre Haute took first place Saturday in the Elks “Hoop Shoot” free-throw contest at Angola.
Craft made 22 out of 25 free throws to win her 11-13-year-old age group. Along with the other champions from the Great Lakes Regional contest, Craft will now advance to the National Finals of the Hoop Shoot, where she will compete against the other regional winners from across the United States. The National Finals will be held in Springfield, Mass., on April 27.
Softball
* ISU splits — At Wichita, Kan., Indiana State won its Missouri Valley Conference opener for the first time since 2008 but lost a heartbreaker in the second game against Wichita State.
ISU won the opener 4-2 and Wichita State took the nightcap 4-3.
“We played well enough to win two games today,” coach Shane Bouman said. “It was fun to be a part of Sycamore softball until 22 free bases over the last two innings of game two, and that’s the reason for the split. We have a great opportunity to win a series [today] and I know we will come out ready to play.”
A single by Kelsey Montgomery, two wild pitches and an RBI single by Morgan Allee gave the Sycamores a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the first game, and they scored three more in the top of the seventh. Alexa Cavin had a two-out, two-run double, stole third and scored on a throwing error for a 4-0 lead.
Ashli Scott allowed three of her five hits in the bottom of the seventh but got the complete-game victory.
ISU jumped ahead in the second game after Cavin walked and came around on a double by Shelby Wilson asnd an RBI single by Abbie Malchow.
The Shockers tied the score, but ISU had a 2-1 lead after Allee was hit by a pitch and scored on Wilson’s single. It was 3-1 in the top of the seventh when Allee scored on an error after her leadoff single, but the Shockers got two hits and three walks to come from behind in the bottom of the inning.
The finale of the three-game series between the teams, both currently 10-14 overall and 1-1 in the MVC, is 1 p.m. today.
* Rose swept by Illinois College — Illinois College relied on a strong overall effort to sweep Rose-Hulman 5-2 and 5-0 in a Saturday softball doubleheader.
Carly Heibel smashed a double among two hits with one RBI to lead the Rose-Hulman offensive effort in game one. Lindsey Watterson added to the offensive effort with a triple.
Alyse Mueller tossed a complete game in the opener with four strikeouts and just two earned runs allowed.
In the nightcap, Leah Schumaker tossed a six-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead the Illinois College effort. Alese Speckmart and Paige Meyer added home runs for the Lady Blues.
Taylor Lockhart and Jenna Martinek had two singles each to lead the Rose-Hulman offense in the nightcap. Lockhart tossed a complete game in the pitching circle for the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman dropped to 4-8. The Engineers host Greenville College on Wednesday.
In Friday action, the Engineers scored twice in the eighth inning to win 5-4, then lost the second game 10-0 to visiting Taylor.
The visitors took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth but Carly Heibel drove in the tying run with a double in the bottom of the inning and scored the winning run following a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Allison Bowman.
Two Taylor pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the second game.

* Rose takes second — Rose-Hulman placed second in the Engineer Women’s Tennis Invitational, featuring Franklin and Trine, on Friday and Saturday at the Wabash Valley Tennis Center.
The tandem of junior Paige Cook and sophomore Suzana Mohd led the Rose-Hulman effort with wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, along with a victory at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Kylie McCollum and junior Lauren Reberger also won at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, and combined for a win at No. 3 doubles.
