Terre Haute North rolls in pool play: Clinton, West Terre Haute are today’s championship foes

Terre Haute North’s offense hit fast and furious, scoring a combined 20 runs in the first inning to highlight the final day of pool play in the Little League District 4 11-12s and 9-10s baseball tournament on Saturday.

North’s 11-12s tallied eight first-inning runs in downing West Terre Haute 13-3, while North’s 9-10s scored 12 runs in the first en route to a 23-0 cruise-control victory over Clinton.

Both games went just four innings due to the 10-run rule, and both were played on North’s diamond. Both games also served as elimination games, the losing teams dropping out of today’s championship round.

In the 11-12s tourney, North (2-0 in pool play) will host Clinton (1-1) in its championship game at 2 p.m. today. In the 9-10s, North (2-0) hosts West Terre Haute (1-1) in its title tilt at 11 a.m.

North’s 11-12s scored their eight first-inning runs on just two hits. Both hits were for extra bases, a double by Jason Mundell and the big blow, a grand slam home run by Chance Cooper.

Combined with seven walks, a hit batsman, an error, two wild pitches, two passed balls, North led 8-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, North scored five runs on seven hits. Big blows here were a three-run triple by reserve Avery Briddick and a two-run double by Colten Panaranto.

West Terre Haute crept to within 13-3 through the middle of the third inning, in large part owing to a double, single and two RBIs by Jacob Turner. Turner narrowly missed a home run in the second inning, the ball bounding off the top of the right-field fence.

North used four pitchers, none going over the 20-pitch limit, leaving them all eligible to pitch in today’s championship game.

“We came in, we didn’t want to blow any pitchers today if we didn’t have to,” North acting manager Walt Kirby stated. “[Friday] night we had to blow a pitcher. He was on so we went with him.

“[Saturday] the idea was to go with 20 pitches. … This team is pretty stacked with pitching. [Today] is going to be tough. We’ll have everybody available except for one pitcher.”

North nipped host team Clinton 5-3 in their meeting during pool play on Friday. In that earlier matchup, Panaranto started and threw just 20 pitches, then Blade Pittman was the pitcher Kirby referred to who went the rest of the way.

“There was a little postgame activity [Friday] so it might be exciting [today],” Kirby said of today’s matchup with Clinton. “We’re going to try to come in and get it over early. Kendall Riley will be on the mound and hopefully he can go the distance, play four innings, celebrate and get ready to go to state.”

In the 9-10s game, North pounded out 19 hits. Seven hits and six walks keyed the North 12-run first, the key blow a three-run home run by Tanner Pittman.

Eight of North’s nine starters had hits, including a combined 4-for-4 effort from its two reserve players. To show their depth, their second and fourth spots in the batting order were both 4-for-4, two players going 2-for-2 in each instance.

In the fourth position, Pittman had a home run, double and four RBIs, then Garrett Drake added a triple, single and three RBIs. In the second position, Parker Hathaway and Cam Harden had two singles apiece.

“We did what we needed to do … came out and scored a bunch of runs,” North manager Chad Lawson said. “Hit the ball, played pretty good defense, pitched well. I was proud of the boys as hot as it was to stick it out and play the way they did.”

Gage Manuel tossed a complete game, scattering four hits, walking just one and striking out five Clinton batters in his four-inning stint.

“[Manuel] did a good job for us,” Lawson said. “We only wanted to use one pitcher today and I was able to do that. That was big.”

Today’s championship winners will advance to their respective Little League state tournaments, the 11-12s going to Osolo from July 21-28, the 9-10s headed to Dyer from July 28-Aug. 2.

  • Hughes, News & Views: Terre Haute ‘hacker' accomplishes Mark’s Par Three first

It’s no secret that Mark’s Par Three is not the most difficult golf course in Vigo County.
But it’s enjoyable for beginners and golfers of modest skill levels and it doesn’t lack for activity during warm-weather months.
Open since 1964, it’s had its fair share of players test their skills, probably several better than 43-year-old Brian Brown of Terre Haute.

  • Prettyman getting comfortable as boss

At first glance, it would be easy to look at first-year Terre Haute Rex manager Ronnie Prettyman and expect him to have a difficult journey during his maiden voyage as a baseball manager.
Managing in the Prospect League isn’t the easiest job in the world.
Rosters change constantly, especially early in the season when players are still reporting from their college teams. The travel is arduous — a night game in far-off Quincy, Ill., could be followed by a home game, followed by a game at equally far-off Hannibal, Mo. The players have to acclimate themselves to playing every day after having played a maximum of five games a week at the college level.

Indiana State junior Justin Gant has been invited to travel to the Ivory Coast this summer as part of an Athletes In Action basketball tour.
“I am extremely honored to be given this opportunity to not only play basketball with and against some great players during this tour, but to also share my Christian faith with those in the Ivory Coast,” Gant commented. “I’m looking forward to growing as a person by delivering aid to those in Africa and by sharing my faith with those we come in contact with. This will also be a great chance to continue to improve on the basketball court just before we start our workouts at Indiana State in the fall.”

When I covered my first event of Indiana State’s 2012-13 season — ISU’s opening football game at Indiana — I was the first one in the press box at IU’s Memorial Stadium. I’m never the first one in the press box.
Maybe the prospect of ISU’s season had me so pumped that I decided to get it started close to three hours early? (Or more truthfully, maybe I was over-vigilent about predicted traffic horrors on the Indiana 46 bypass that never came to pass.)
