Wayne Newton takes second in Paducah tourney

PADUCAH, Ky. — A Wayne Newton Post 346 lineup that had been hitting well for three days suddenly went cold on Sunday at the Paducah Tournament for American Legion baseball, leaving the Terre Haute team the runner-up in the tournament.

Although Post 346 had just eight hits for the day, it bunched three of them in one inning and got a complete-game six-hitter from Bryan Nacke in winning a semifinal game 2-1 over Vero Beach, Fla., on Sunday.

But in the championship game, Terre Haute had just three hits and fell 6-2 to Decatur, Ala.

Singles by Cody Thornton and Zach Milam preceded a two-run double by Preston Tofaute that was the difference against the Florida team.

Tony Rosselli’s RBI triple that was the big blow in a two-run in the championship game wasn’t enough, however. Injuries to Dalton Sexton and Daniel Marlow also put a damper on the day for the Terre Haute team.

Post 346 has a home doubleheader Tuesday, then is back on the road for a tournament at Moline, Ill.

In a late Saturday game:

Wayne Newton Post 346 11, Mayfield, Ky., 6 — Post 346 scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, then got back-to-back homers from Sam Wolf and Tony Rosselli for three more in the second in the final pool game of the Paducah Tournament.

Mayfield got within 6-4 in the fourth inning Saturday, but Terre Haute responded with three runs in that inning and two more in the bottom of the fifth.

  • Terre Haute North offense unable to get going in loss to Mooresville

Jack Kirchner chose to give credit Monday night to Mooresville pitcher Taylor Chitwood, not to the Greg Maddux-size strike zone she seemed to enjoy.
But if there were no excuses forthcoming from Kirchner and his Terre Haute North High School softball team, it wouldn’t have been hard to find a spectator or two to come up with extenuating circumstances about the Patriots’ 4-1 loss at the Class 4A Martinsville Sectional.
