TERRE HAUTE —
Carmel remained unbeaten in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference boys high school basketball Friday night, defeating Terre Haute South 58-39 in the South gym.
The Greyhounds, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, won for the 10th time in their last 11 games to improve to 11-2 and 3-0 in the conference.
The team from Hamilton County connected on 23 of 47 shots for 49 percent and was good on 7 of 17 3-point shots. The Greyhounds also had a 34-26 edge on the boards with Ben Gardner having a game-high nine to go along with his 13 points.
James Crowley led the winners with 18 points, getting 11 in the second period and firing in 4 of 6 3-point shots.
South made 15 of 48 shots and 4 of 13 3-pointers. Jeffrey Turner led the 5-11 Braves with 17 points and Sean Benford had seven rebounds.
Michael Volovic hit one of his two buckets to break a 9-9 tie and Carmel took a 13-10 lead into the second stanza when the Greyhounds outscored the Braves 17-9 on the strength of Crowley's 11 points.
South trailed 30-19 at halftime, with Carmel connecting on 13 of 25 shots and four 3-pointers. Carmel took a 42-26 lead into the final frame.
Coach Scott Heady used seven players in the contest. In addition to the double-figure scoring by Gardner and Crowley, two other players had six points each, another had eight and five while three of them had five rebounds each and one had six.
South coach Scott Ridge said Carmel showed why it is ranked third in the state in Class 4A.
“Carmel is kind of small. You look at them and think they are not the third best team in the state and then you watch them and say they are really good. I have seen four games … you look around — they have shooters, they have dribblers, they don't take bad shots, they don't make bad decisions,” he said.
“A high school team with a great point guard is tough to beat and Carmel has two. If we get one guy out of position, Carmel can exploit it. They make good decisions. They have smart kids. They will do well,” he added.
“We have some guys playing hard. We just have to get a full team defensive focus,” he said.
The Braves will go against rival Terre Haute North next Friday in Hulman Center.
South's junior varsity improved to 8-4 in the prelim, topping Carmel 37-34 on a 3-pointer by Kevaris Gregory in the final 30 seconds.
