TERRE HAUTE —
A pair of lightning delays, plus the first two innings played in a steady drizzle/light rain, didn’t faze the Riley 12U baseball team as it was undeterred in its task at hand.
Despite the various inconveniences tossed in by Mother Nature, host team Riley 12U earned a 7-1 victory over Irvington in the Central Indiana Cal Ripken 12U State Tournament on Saturday.
Riley 12U will face New Palestine — a team it defeated 11-1 in pool play on Friday — in the first semifinal game at noon today. The winner will advance to the championship game at 6 p.m. on Monday.
“A little tough with the weather delay to stay focused, but our guys did a good job in very tough conditions … they played through it,” Riley 12U manager Bryan Duncan explained.
While the weather conditions were at their toughest, Riley used the largess of Irvington’s pitching and defense to forge an early lead.
Riley took advantage of a walk, a hit batsman and three Irvington errors to plate three runs in the bottom of the first without benefit of a hit.
In the second, Riley worked four walks, but hadn’t scored with one of its baserunners being thrown out at the plate on a short passed ball. However, Wyatt Joy rose to the occasion with a two-out RBI single to put Riley up 4-0 after two innings.
“With very tough conditions it’s good to get a couple breaks, got the early lead and that helped a bunch,” Duncan noted. “Took their minds off the conditions.”
Irvington threatened to score its first run in the top of the third, but a long, accurate throw from left fielder Kaleb Hauptli to catcher Jevan McCoskey who applied the tag, kept Riley up 4-0 at the midway point in the game.
“Kaleb plays about every position on the field for us, he made a nice throw from left field,” Duncan said. Hauptli started in right field on Friday, started in left field on Saturday, then finished the game as the catcher for the final three innings.
Irvington finally pushed across a run in the top of the fourth, but Riley responded with three runs of their own — all coming with two outs.
Trevor Trump reached on an infield single and stole second, then Wyatt Joy walked. Zach Duncan, Jordan Woolard and Cory Adkins followed with consecutive RBI singles to account for the 7-1 lead.
Riley attempted two-out magic again in the fifth. Singles by Dylan Schneider and Trump came with two outs, but this time they failed to score.
Zach Duncan, the winning pitcher, and Trump both tossed three innings for Riley. Trump struck out six Irvington batters.
n Riley 11U eliminated — Riley’s 11U all-star team was not nearly as fortunate, dropping a pair of games on Saturday in the Central Indiana Cal Ripken 11U State Tournament, also played at Riley.
After defeating Clay County in pool play on Friday, Riley 11U was thumped by Irvington 19-1 in four innings to finish pool play. Then Riley was eliminated from the tournament in dropping a 14-9 verdict to Shelby County.
Clay County 11U remained alive as its elimination game against Connersville was suspended in the top of the sixth inning with Connersville leading 7-6. The game resumes at 11 a.m. today.

Sycamores bow out of MVC Tournament
Indiana State’s baseball was out of pitching, and after a loss to Wichita State on Thursday, the Sycamores were out of second-chances too at the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament. What the Sycamores weren’t out of was heart, guts and clutch performances from some unlikely sources. But in the end, Friday’s elimination game rematch against the Shockers was a sampling of ISU’s season overall — the Sycamores were out of luck.

Luck having fun with his first OTAs
A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton].
