TERRE HAUTE —
Dylan Schneider was a one-man wrecking crew to lead host Riley to an 11-1 five-inning victory over New Palestine in their opening pool-play game in the Central Indiana Cal Ripken 12U State Tournament on Friday.
Schneider — who was selected as the the “Player of the Game” afterwards — had a pair of doubles and a long home run to center field to lead the Riley cause.
Solid pitching from Wyatt Joy (three innings) and Zach Duncan (two innings) limited New Palestine to just three hits and one unearned run.
“We’re very pleased with the effort of the guys tonight, they did a good job,” Riley 12U manager Bryan Duncan said. “Dylan [Schneider] is a high-energy player and does very well for us.
“The guys just stayed focused, that’s our main thing. Full effort on defense every play and that’s when I can tell we’re hustling and playing well.”
Schneider’s first double was of the seeing-eye variety in the top of the first, later scoring on a New Palestine error for a 1-0 lead.
Schneider’s second double was of the ringing variety, driving in a run during an eight-run third inning. Other big hits in the frame was a two-run double by Carson Kline, while Trevor Trump and Kaleb Hauptli added RBI-singles.
Joy, a lefthander, started and pitched a scoreless three innings, striking out five batters. He pitched around two walks and a hit batsman in the third, getting out of the jam via a line-drive double play.
New Palestine plated its only run in the fourth inning off Zach Duncan, benefitting from three errors by Riley to get within 9-1.
Riley put the 10-run rule in play with its 11-1 lead after hitting two solo home runs in the top of the fifth. Reserve Jordan Woolard powered a drive over the left field fence, then with two outs, Schneider hit his home run.
Zach Duncan pitched around a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth to finish off the game in five innings.
“Our pitchers did very well tonight, and they both pitched just three and two innings so we’re pleased about that too,” manager Duncan added.
Riley will finish pool play at 11 a.m. today when they play Irvington — a 4-3 winner over New Palestine on Thursday — with the winner earning a bye to Sunday’s semifinal round.
Pool play games today are scheduled for 9 and 11 a.m. Then the six-team field will be re-seeded and begin single-elimination play starting at 2 p.m. today. Semifinals are Sunday, the championship game set for 6 p.m. on Monday.
• Riley also won its opening pool-play game in the Central Indiana Cal Ripken 11U State Tournament, also played at Riley. The host team topped Clay County 16-6 in five innings just prior to the Tribune-Star’s news deadline.
Clay County scored three runs in the top of the first inning. But Riley responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first, then assumed the lead for keeps with three more tallies in the second.
Riley 11U will also play its Irvington counterpart at 11 a.m. today — Irvington thumped Clay County 9-2 on Thursday — with this winner also earning a direct route to Sunday’s semifinals.
