Not the 1st big win for men’s Fast Track Mile champ

TERRE HAUTE — Although it wasn’t apparent to most spectators at the time, TaPring Goatee wasn’t the only former IHSAA cross country state champion to participate in the 2012 Fast Track Mile through downtown Terre Haute on the Fourth of July.

Goatee, who will be a senior at Terre Haute North High School in the fall, was the women’s overall winner last Wednesday. As a North freshman in 2009, she won the IHSAA state title in girls cross country.

But also worth noting, last week’s winner of the Fast Track Mile men’s masters division (40 and older) was Matt Grady of Louisville, Ky. His time was 4 minutes, 57.2 seconds, which placed 14th overall.

Upon further examination, it turns out this is the same Matt Grady who finished first in the 1982 boys cross country state championship at South Grove Golf Course in Indianapolis. As a senior representing Muncie Northside, he completed the 5,000-meter course in 14:54.3.

As a junior in the spring of 1982, Grady also won the 3,200-meter run in the IHSAA boys track and field state finals. After that, he went on to run college track and cross country for Illinois State and Ball State.

Grady’s best mile time ever was 4:01. “I never could quite break 4 minutes,” the 1983 Muncie Northside graduate noted.

Not every good teenage runner sticks with the activity as he or she gets significantly older. But Grady, now 47, not only still enjoys it, he thrives on winning.

“I was pleased with my time [last week],” he told the Tribune-Star. “I was very pleased to run under 5 minutes.

“I enjoy competing and I still like to win. That’s what drives me.”

Grady married a West Terre Haute girl, the former Susan Stoffel, so he has competed in the Fast Track Mile a few times before while in the area to visit Susan’s mother.

The 6-foot-2, 173-pound Grady was forced to sit out running for a while in his 40s because of hip and knee injuries, but he’s been able to compete again over the last two years and he plans to keep it up as long as he physically can.

“I think I have 4-5 more years to be able to compete with some of these kids,” assessed Grady, who admits he does more post-race icing for aches and pains than he used to.

Grady — who works as a lead recruiter for Experis, a staffing company for engineering and computer profesionals — does volunteer coaching for a middle school cross country team on the side.

Even though Grady’s IHSAA state championships were roughly 30 years ago, he doesn’t mind reminiscing about his glory days when someone prods him.

“My senior year in cross country, I was probably one of the top two or three favorites to win,” he recalled. “I think I jumped out to the lead early and I maintained it to the end, but I didn’t run away with it. Another guy [Tom Feder of Crown Point] made me earn it. I think I got him by a second or two [actually 2.8 seconds, according to the IHSAA website].

“As for the 3,200 my junior year, the person who was favored to win … he came in second. I think I beat him by seven or eight seconds. That was the best I ever ran [in the 3,200] in high school.”
