Prospect League playoffs: Familiar foe for Rex

West Division game tonight at Dubois County

TERRE HAUTE — The Prospect League plays a 60-game regular season schedule. Yet due to schedule realignment for the 2012 season, it manages to cram a Major League Baseball-style intra-divisional slate into those 60 games.

The result? When Terre Haute and Dubois County meet at 7:15 p.m. today in an all-Indiana West Division playoff game, the two teams will be very familiar with one another.

The Rex and Bombers — who are based in Huntingburg — have faced off 12 times.

“There’s nothing out there we don’t know about. They play hard. They’re a bit unconventional in that they came out with the running game — anytime, anywhere,” Rex manager Brian Dorsett said.

The Bombers won the West Division first-half championship with a 20-9 record. Dubois County surged to an early lead and then held off Quincy by 21⁄2 games to take the crown.

By contrast, the slow-starting Rex finished the first half by winning seven of its last 10 games and carried that momentum over into the second half. The Rex won the second half championship with a 21-9 record. The Rex built a sizable lead from the beginning of the second-half schedule — a 4-1 homestand in early July provided the cushion. Terre Haute never looked back from that point.

In the combined first and second half standings, the Rex (37-22) would have a two-game lead over the Bombers (35-24) entering Monday’s regular season finales.

Given the sizzling finish by the Rex, it stands to reason that they dominated the series against Dubois County in the latter part of the campaign. Terre Haute won the season series 7-5, but the Rex took five of the last six games between the two, including the most recent meeting on July 27 at Bob Warn Field.

Dubois County did win the last game in Huntingburg — a 4-3 decision on July 22. At League Stadium, the teams split the six games.

Tommy Strunc will start the playoff game for the Rex. He has a 2.99 ERA, 72 strikeouts and a 5-2 record. Dubois County pitcher Alex Britt leads the Prospect League with a 1.85 ERA. Britt has a 5-1 mark with 46 strikeouts. It is not known whether he’ll start tonight.

While the Rex are second in the Prospect League with a 4.16 ERA (Dubois County is fifth at 4.83), both teams are in the lower half of the Prospect League at the plate.

Center fielder Kyle Kempf paces the Rex with a .366 batting average, fourth-best in the Prospect League. Right fielder Patrick Chandler (.339) and shortstop Nick Johnson (.319) have also crested the .300 mark at the plate. Combo pitcher-first baseman Michael Schroeder leads Terre Haute with 47 RBI.

The Bombers’ leading hitters are familiar names to Indiana State baseball fans.

ISU center fielder Landon Curry is the Bombers’ second-leading hitter at .315 and their leading active hitter. Dubois County’s second-leading hitter is Jeff Zahn, an ISU freshman who hasn’t yet played for the Sycamores. Zahn has a .307 average and is the only other Bomber with an average over .300. ISU pitcher Kurt Kudrecki is also a Bomber.

Frank Rawdow is Dubois County’s leading hitter at .345, but he’s no longer with the team.

The Rex feature Sycamores McCurdy, Jacob Hayes and Michael Eberle. Bragging rights just might be on the line.

“Jeff Zahn and Landon Curry are going to be me and Jacob Hayes’ roommates next year. So that puts a little extra into it,” McCurdy said. “We haven’t talked about it much, but we’ll talk soon. We’ll get a little trash-talking going.”

Dubois County also has former Riverton Parke player Tim Johnson on its roster.

Terre Haute is in the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Rex fell to Quincy in the 2011 semifinals. Given the dramatic roster changes from year-to-year in the Prospect League, there’s not much carry over from one year to the next to fall back on.

“It’s one game. You just have to make sure you’re clean. We’re looking for more hits, but I think the guys are primed,” Dorsett said.

If the Rex win tonight, it will play the winner of the East Division playoff game between West Virginia and either Richmond or Chillicothe in a best-of-three championship series beginning Thursday.

Entering Monday’s action, Richmond has a half-game edge in second place in the East Division over Chillicothe. West Virginia won both halves in the East Division and has a Prospect League-best 40-18 record.

The Rex would play at the East Division site on Thursday. It would host a game on Saturday and Sunday if a third game was necessary.
