Rex win 2-0 to close regular season

TERRE HAUTE — The playoff-bound Terre Haute Rex are hoping Monday’s regular season finale at Bob Warn Field against Danville wasn’t also their last look at Bob Warn Field.

The Rex have rather liked it there this season.

If Monday’s game was to be their last home game, the Rex made it a winning one. In a game completed in 1 hour, 48 minutes, the Rex blanked the Dans 2-0.

The victory capped a 21-9 home record for Terre Haute this season. Given that the Rex began the season 0-3 at home and were 2-5 early in the season, the recovery the Rex had at home was considerable.

Much of the heavy lifting was done in the last month of the season. Starting with a 4-1 homestand that began on July 5, the Rex are 13-3 at home since.

Monday’s game was won on the mound. Starter Ben Dartnell got the win as he struck out four batters in five innings of work. Even more impressive was the four innings of relief pitched by Clay Manwering. He struck out six batters in four innings and didn’t surrender a single walk.

The game was played at a brisk pace with a big strike zone and both teams swinging at early pitches as the string was played out in the regular season. Scoring opportunities for both teams were few and far between.

The struggling Dans — Danville finished in the last place with a 9-21 second-half record and 17-43 overall mark — only got one runner to second base and it was in the first inning.

Terre Haute (22-9) didn’t fare much better, but it got all of the baserunners it needed in the second. Michael Eberle was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to third on a Kyle Zimmerman single. Second baseman Edmund Cheatham then knocked both runners home with a triple to right field.

That’s all of the runs the Rex needed. Danville only had three runners on base in the final six innings.

See related story on tonight’s Prospect League West Division playoff game between the Rex and the Dubois County Bombers.
