METRO ROUNDUP: Team of Jones, Kaperak triumphs

Tom Jones and Ted Kaperak maintained their first-day lead and won the Show-Me’s Two-Man Best Ball for the second time on Sunday.

Jones and Kaperak shot 61 on Saturday at Hulman Links and finished with 68 at Rea Park in the final round for a 15-under-par 129 score.

They were five shots better than Abe Nasser, 60, and Dave Nasser, 70, who had rounds of 68 and 66 for 134.

Teams made up of Larry Fossi and Larry Griffin and Blayd Horrall and Denny Byram tied for fourth at 135.

Jones and Kaperak had nine birdies and an eagle in Saturday’s round and four birdies in the final round.

“It was businesslike,” Jones said of the final round. He and Kaperak also teamed to win the Terre Haute Golf Åssociation event last year. “Both courses were in great shape. Terre Haute is blessed … we all need to pray for rain.”

Kyle Stevenson and Robert Harrison tied Gregg and Charlie Kluesner for first place in the first flight. Both teams shot 137.

Greg Greven and Jim Snoddy won the second flight while Mike Lacy and Ted Schneider took third-flight honors.

The Kluesners carded 67 on Sunday as did the teams of Brad Miley and Chris Keen and Fossi and Griffin.



• Coming up – The Clinton City will be played at Geneva Hills this weekend. It is open to all players.

The Brazil Open and the first Mundy Game of the season are set for June 30-July 1. Next THGA event is the Terre Haute Savings Bank Mini-City set for July 7-8.

• Holiday ace — At Mark’s Par Three, Sherm “Big Daddy” Wilkins got his first-ever hole-in-one on Father’s Day, playing Sunday with his sons, his sons-in-law and his grandson.

Wilkins used an 8-iron on the 105-yard seventh hole, a shot witnessed by Dave Elder, Gene Bedwell, Paul Stone, Jordan Stone, Matt Wilkins and Gary Wilkins.

• Hagen gets win
— At Lawrenceburg, Darren Hagen was the big winner on Saturday in the fourth Indiana Midget Week race at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

Hagen led the final two laps and took advantage of some late cautions to get the victory, edging Alex Bright.

Hagen hiked his lead in the U.S. Auto Club midget point totals to 162 over Tracy Hines going into the final Midget Week action Sunday at Kokomo Speedway.

• Junior girls sweep, boys split — At Goshen, Ky., Indiana’s junior girls beat Kentucky’s juniors 78-68 Saturday night to complete a two-game sweep of the first junior series between the two states, but the Kentucky junior boys salvaged a split with an 81-71 decision.

Taya Reimer of Hamilton Southeastern and Stephanie Mavunga of Brownsburg had double-doubles for the Indiana girls Saturday, Reimer with 24 points and 11 rebounds and Mavunga with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Nicole Anderson of Terre Haute North and Rhagen Smith of Sullivan saw action for Indiana on Saturday, with Smith grabbing five rebounds and Anderson getting part of the credit for defending Kentucky’s Becca Greenwell, held to 16 points after scoring 44 a night earlier.

Zavier Turner led Indiana’s boys with 14 points in the game at North Oldham High School.

• All-Star Classic — At Newcastle, several Wabash Valley girls saw action Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the 2012 All-Star Classic.

In a senior girls game Saturday, Carmela Roeschlein of Clay City had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Brielle Drelick, also of Clay City, scored nine points with four rebounds and two assists, although their Red 2 team lost 86-66 to White 1.

In a Thursday game for juniors, Nicole Anderson of Terre Haute North had 13 points and seven rebounds and Rhagen Smith of Sullivan 11 points and eight rebounds as their White 3 team beat Red 4 96-91. Tasia Brewer of Terre Haute South had seven points in a losing cause.

In another junior game, Riverton Parke’s Sara Dickey had five points and three rebounds as her Red 2 team beat White 1 100-88.

    Cindy and Mark Wilguess are the inspiration behind the Taghleef Team. Cindy herself fought this battle with cancer and won. Last year she led her team to be the No. 1 fundraisers in the Relay for Life.

  • Carpenter arrives as Indy 500 threat

    And the crowd went wild.
    Not only did Ed Carpenter win the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, he is the hometown son. Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now.

     Ed Carpenter is on the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500.
    The native of Marshall, Ill., earned the No. 1 spot for the May 26 race with a strong run in the Fast Nine competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. He is the first American driver on the pole since 2006.

    Today is the day for the Thunder in the Valley, and the Terre Haute Triathlon is under new leadership in 2013, the 28th year for the event at Hawthorn Park.
    A former Terre Haute North track and cross country standout, Ethan Page is the race director as the race falls under the reign of Page’s new company, Crossroads Events.

    Friday night, winning the second game 5-0 and earning a share of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference high school baseball title.
    Damon Olds was dominant on the mound for the Braves, striking out 14 and walking just one while pitching a three-hit shutout.

  • Ort sets ISU RBI record in 16-7 win

    Robby Ort celebrated his Indiana State baseball Senior Day on Saturday by becoming the Sycamores’ all-time leader in RBIs as ISU ended its regular season with a 16-7 win over Bradley at Bob Warn Field.

    Momentum was the only thing riding on Indiana State’s baseball game against Bradley on Friday. With a five-game winning streak going, ISU wanted to keep the good vibes going into next week’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
    ISU couldn’t do it.

  • Indiana State women add five transfers, including experienced D-I point guard

    Indiana State coach Teri Moren believes the addition of five more newcomers to the program — in addition to the five who had already joined the program earlier this calendar year — will provide her coaching staff the athleticism and depth it needs to play a successful, up-tempo brand of basketball next season.
