TERRE HAUTE —
The Terre Haute-based semi-pro West Central Wildcats football team is welcoming new players for its 2012 season.
The Wildcats, beginning their ninth season of operation, are coached by Mike Rindone. They finished 11-1 in 2011 and 9-2 in 2010.
Among current Wildcat players with Wabash Valley, Indiana State University or Rose-Hulman connections are K.C. Wilson, Greg Ellis, Cogan Keith, Dan Smith, Steven Belleu, Nate Brown, Chris Stepp, Ryan Keys, Mike Landry, Kyle Dean, Evan Moore and Mike Russell.
This season, home games will be played at various locations — including Memorial Stadium, Rose-Hulman’s Cook Stadium, Marshall (Ill.) High School and Cloverdale High School.

Softball
• ISU drops two — At Evansville, Indiana State (19-33, 6-19 MVC) dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Purple Aces of Evansville (17-36, 6-20 MVC). Despite the losses, the Sycamores still remain in contention to make the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. The Sycamores will take the last spot in the tournament with a win on Sunday and a Wichita State loss against Drake.
ISU lost 4-3 in 10 innings in the opener. Lindsay Beisser tossed a complete game and struck out seven, allowing no earned runs.
ISU left 12 runners stranded in a 4-1 loss in the nightcap. Megan Stone went 3 for 3, and Alex Lucas 3 for 4.
The finale of the series will take place Sunday at Cooper Stadium in Evansville with first pitch set for noon. If the Sycamores win and Wichita State loses then the Sycamores will move into the eighth spot in the MVC standings and advance to the MVC tournament.
Golf
• Rowen wins — At Noblesville, Sean Rowen shot a 4-under-par 138 to win the IGA Tournament of Champions concluded Saturday at Fox Prairie Course.
Rowen had rounds of 71 and 67 to edge Kenny Cook who finished with 139.
Ted Kaperak tied for 21st, going 70-77 for 147, and Dave Brown tied for 33rd with 151, shooting 72-69.
• Rose men last — At Seymour, the Rose-Hulman men’s team stands eighth after three days of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Junior John Rigitano stands 21st individually with scores of 80, 85 and 77.
The final round of the four-day tournament is at Honeywell G.C. in Wabash today.
Auto racing
• Too wet — Rain wiped out Friday’s race card at Bloomington Speedway.
Features for super stocks, hornets, modifieds and bombers will be on the card this week.
• Larson posts win — At Dodge City, Kan., Kyle Larson won the feature in U.S. Auto Club midget racing Friday.
Larson led the final 24 turns to win the 30-lap main event. Brad Kuhn was second and Bryan Clauson third.
More racing was slated Saturday at Dodge City.

• Rose wins, loses — At Indianapolis, Rose-Hulman advanced to the semifinal round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s tournament with a 5-0 win over Anderson University on Saturday morning.
The Engineers then fell to top-seeded Earlham College 5-0.
Rose-Hulman finished the season at 10-7. Earlham (18-1) will advance to the HCAC tournament finals.

Not only did Ed Carpenter win the pole for the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500, he is the hometown son. Carpenter, the stepson of Tony George, completed his rookie orientation in 2004 and has spent the last several years, proving he deserved to be the IZOD IndyCar Series. There is no questioning his credentials now. -

The native of Marshall, Ill., earned the No. 1 spot for the May 26 race with a strong run in the Fast Nine competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday. He is the first American driver on the pole since 2006. -

Robby Ort celebrated his Indiana State baseball Senior Day on Saturday by becoming the Sycamores’ all-time leader in RBIs as ISU ended its regular season with a 16-7 win over Bradley at Bob Warn Field.

Colts hoping for more high marks on draft picks
A year ago, the Indianapolis Colts received high marks for the impact players the team added through the NFL draft.
Of the 10 players selected, five ended up either starting or seeing extensive playing time (quarterback Andrew Luck, tight ends Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and running back Vick Ballard) during the Colts’ 11-5 season.
