Indiana State sophomore Greggmar Swift has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office Tuesday.
The sophomore is the third member of the Sycamore team to receive the honor this season.
Swift was one of two Indiana State winners on the men’s side at the 103rd Drake Relays this past weekend, capturing the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.72 seconds in the finals Saturday. Swift won the third heat of the preliminaries Friday by running 14.00.
Saturday’s win was Swift’s third 110 hurdle race of Saturday’s competition as he also anchored the 4x110 shuttle hurdle relay team that ran 56.42 to win the finals Saturday afternoon. The relay time is the second fastest in school history.
Swift currently ranks second in the Valley in the 110 hurdles, 13th on the national performance list in the 110 hurdles and seventh on the NCAA East performance list.
Three other Sycamores earned Notable Performance recognition from the Valley, including junior Brandon Pounds in men’s field, junior Leeann Michl in women’s track and junior Richelle Kimble in women’s field.
Pounds threw 204 feet, 4 inches on his fifth attempt in the men’s hammer throw at the 103rd Drake Relays Saturday to finish fifth in the competition. The junior was the top Valley athlete in the competition. Pounds has the top throw in the Valley this season which also ranks 10th on the national performance list and fifth on the NCAA East performance list.
Michl competed in the 800 and ran on a record-setting relay at the 103rd Drake Relays this past weekend. Michl finished fourth in a highly competitive women’s seeded 800 Friday with a time of 2:08.57. The junior was shuffled to the back early in the race and had to run mostly in the second and third lanes but rallied with a strong finish to come within a second of Kansas State senior Boglarka Bozay who won the race in 2:07.48.
Michl ran the anchor leg of the women’s 1,600 sprint medley relay that set an Indiana State record with a 3:51.19 finish that placed them second behind Arkansas, who set a stadium record with a 3:45.48 finish. The junior also anchored the 4x400 team that finished as the top Valley team in the preliminaries and 11th overall with a time of 3:42.48.
Michl has the top time in the Valley for the 800, the 39th fastest on the national performance list and 21st best on the NCAA East performance list. The 4x400 relay team is also on top of the Valley this season and has the 79th best time on the national performance list and 31st on the NCAA East performance list.
Kimble matched her personal best by clearing 13-1 1⁄2 as she was placed fifth in the women’s pole vault at the 103rd Drake Relays on Friday. Kimble, Illinois sophomore Stephanie Richartz, Cincinnati junior MacKenzie Fields and Mississippi junior Neal Tisher each cleared 13-11⁄2, with Kimble placing fifth by the number of misses.
Kimble leads the Valley in the pole vault. Kimble also ranks 49th on the national performance list and 21st on the NCAA East performance list.
