Ramblin' Reck: Irish lead the way in successful college football week in Indiana

TERRE HAUTE —

Last week was a good one for several of the college football teams in Indiana.

Notre Dame, of course, had the nicest week of all, beating Wake Forest 38-0 and moving into No. 1 in the polls following losses by Oregon and Kansas State.

The Irish can finish unbeaten by beating Southern Cal and be assured of playing for a national championship for the first time since 1988. Should they do that, it will be interesting to see which team they will oppose in the title tilt.

Some of the colleges began postseason play last week and were winners.

Marian and St. Francis both won their first games in the NAIA playoffs, with Marian defeating Northwestern of Iowa 42-32 and St. Francis stopping Baker of Kansas 22-17. They play each other Saturday afternoon at Marian.

Indianapolis was successful in its first postseason appearance in 37 years, the Greyhounds defeating Midwestern State 31-14 in NCAA Division II action. Next up is a game at top-ranked Colorado-Pueblo.

Franklin was a 42-10 winner over Adrian in an NCAA Division III contest and next will play Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Purdue won another game, defeating Illinois 20-17, and has the chance to go bowling again.

Indiana State did not win on Saturday at Youngstown State but concluded another super season. Great work by coach Trent Miles and his staff and the players.

High school championship games will be played in Indiana and Illinois this week.

The Indiana schedule:

Class A — Indianapolis Scecina (11-3) vs. Lafayette Central Catholic (13-1)

Class 2A — Fort Wayne Luers (10-4) vs. Indianapolis Ritter (14-0)

Class 3A — Hamilton Heights (13-1) vs. Indianapolis Chatard (12-2)

Class 4A — Mishawaka (11-3) vs. Indianapolis Cathedral (9-5)

Class 5A — Lawrence Central (14-0) vs. Fort Wayne Snider (14-0)

You will notice that a private school from Indianapolis is in each class final except one.

In Illinois, Belleville Althoff is in the championship game for Class 2A. The Crusaders nipped Casey on the way to the finals.

Players from the area again were among the leaders in statistical categories in Indiana, not counting games played last week.

In passing, Austin Karaszia of Linton was second, completing 229 of 323 passes for 3,191 yards and 41 touchdowns.

In rushing, Chase VanSchoyck of North Central was fifth with 1,944 yards on 192 carries.

Dante Rehmel of North Central was fifth in solo tackles with 109 and third in tackles for losses with 27 while Brett Gierke of Greencastle was tied for 10th in sacks with 11.

In interceptions, Koye Kaiser of Linton was tied for fourth with seven.
