Rex lose to struggling Danville

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex ran into a Danville team determined to get untracked and a young pitcher dealing some vicious pitches from the mound Tuesday.

Trevor Fitts, a 230-pound right-handed freshman from Mississippi State, struck out five and allowed just two hits through five innings as the Dans built a 5-0 lead.

Jacob Hayes doubled after a Nick Johnson RBI triple in the sixth, but Fitts finished with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings to lift the 3-10 Dans to a 5-2 victory Tuesday at Bob Warn Field.

Danville was off to a 2-10 start before Tuesday. Part of the blame, manager Jaime Sailors said, was that about 19 players they expected to have were not with the team.

Fitts had just arrived with the team Monday.

“He was good,” Sailors said. “He kept it down and threw his breaking ball for strikes. Around the fourth inning, he started using his slider to finish things off. I don’t think [the Rex] touched the slider.”

Sailors is still awaiting some other talented players. The slow start might make it tough on the Dans to win the West Division in the first half of the Prospect League race, but Sailors said he expects the Dans to be a team to be reckoned with as the 56-game season progresses.

With manager Brian Dorsett out of town, Terre Haute acting manager Ronnie Prettyman expects the same from the Rex as the team strives for consistency early in the summer.

Terre Haute (6-7) struggled with defense over the weekend, and the bats and pitching struggled in Tuesday’s first of a two-game set against Danville. Starter Kameron Stady, a junior at Mississippi Valley State, walked seven in 4 2/3 innings, giving the Dans too many opportunities early in the game.

“That’s not what he usually does for us. We’ll keep our heads up and look forward to his next start,” Prettyman said. “We’re playing pretty good baseball. What we focused on today was our defense after the weekend. We’ve just got to swing the bats better than we did tonight.”

Sometimes a pitcher has his good stuff. Hayes, who added a single in the ninth, and his teammates said Fitts was tough to hit as he changed speeds and hit the corners with his 90-plus fastball and sharp breaking ball.

The Terre Haute native saw a fastball up with a 2-1 count to hit a double to right-center field. He was caught trying to stretch it to a triple, putting a damper on the Rex rally.

“You never want to make the first out at third like that, and I just didn’t see coach [Ronnie Prettyman] giving me the stop sign because of the sun,” Hayes said.

The Rex will try to avenge the defeat tonight at Bob Warn Field.

“We put a couple good swings on him. Fortunately we just didn’t have a big inning. Hats off to him for doing a good job tonight,” Prettyman said. “We’ll go back to work.”
