Stewart scores career-high 26 to lead West Vigo at Greencastle

GREENCASTLE — Kyle Stewart scored a career high 26 points and the West Vigo Vikings came from behind for the second night in a row to earn a victory and a weekend week.

Trailing by five at halftime, West Vigo rallied for a 65-56 victory over the host Greencastle Tiger Cubs. The victory improved West Vigo to 7-4 overall and 4-0 against the Class 3A Sectional 28 field, that will be played at Greencastle.

Stewart scored 22 of his career-high 26 points in the second half when the Vikings rallied from a 40-35 halftime deficit. The 5-7 senior also made a game-high five steals.

“[Stewart] was being aggressive and he understands that’s what he has to do. He’s one of our leaders, he’s been our leading scorer for a big part of the year and I think he felt like with some of our guys sitting on the bench in foul trouble he had to take on a bigger role tonight and I thought he did a great job with that,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said.

West Vigo also got 13 points from Adrien Corenflos and a big game-high eight rebounds from Lance Stonebarger.

Greencastle (1-8) was led by Holden King with 17 points off the bench, followed by Brody Bollman with 12 points and seven rebounds and Lance Winslow with 12 points.

Foul trouble put West Vigo in a hole the first half. The Vikings were called for seven fouls in the first quarter and 11 the first half. Cade Lindsey and Adrien Corenflos were both on the West Vigo bench with three fouls before the first quarter ended.

Greencastle took a 15-10 lead into the second period and increased the margin to 21-10 when King opened the quarter with back-to-back threes.

But West Vigo’s Tyler Wilson responded to the call with six points and the Vikings trailed just 27-22 at halftime.

Sparked by Stewart’s three steals and nine points, West Vigo outscored Greencastle 18-8 in the third period take the lead. Stewart stole ball and passed ahead ot Kirby for a lway to tie the game 35-35. Then Stonebarger found Stewart open for a three that put that Vikings on top for good with 57 seconds left in the third quarter.

West Vigo led 40-35 going into the fourth quarter and extended its lead to 61-50 when Corenflos hit two free throws with 1:05 to play.

Boehler was really pleased with the weekend sweep.

“We got a lot of really tough weekends coming up, but I’m really looking forward to it because we’re really working towards getting ready for the end of the season. We’ve got some really good teams on our schedule down the stretch and I think they’re really going to help us get better to get prepared for the sectional tournament,” Boehler said.

Next — West Vigo (7-4, 3-1 in WIC) plays at West Vigo on Friday night. Greencastle (1-8, 1-0 in WCC) will host South Putnam the same night.
