South tops Casey in consolation championship

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South and Casey opened the final day of the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic on Monday with a shootout.

The Braves started and finished strong to win the game 83-79, getting even for the season at 6-6 and winning the consolation championship for the second straight season.

Both teams shot over 50 percent for the game. South was 33 of 55 with six treys for 60 percent. Casey hit 30 of 51 field goals with nine 3-pointers for 59 percent.

The Braves and Warriors were pretty even in other areas. South had a 23-22 edge on the boards and both teams had 17 turnovers.

South scored the first six points of the matinee action and had a 20-18 lead at the first stop and was up 41-39 at halftime. Jeffrey Turner had 25 of his career-high 38 points at the break and Trivette Scales had 15 of his career-best 32 at the break.

South fronted by nine points in the third canto and took a 57-51 lead into the final frame.

Scales hit one of his 3-pointers to give Casey a 67-65 lead but South responded with eight straight points — scored by four different players — for a 73-67 advantage.

Casey twice cut that lead to one point. Turner hit two free throws once for a 75-72 lead. After Matt McCown hit for the Warriors, Shane Stanley and Turner got buckets for South and the Braves led 79-75.

McCown got another basket to make it a three-point game and Brandon Wolfe hit a 3-pointer after Connor Shipley hit two free throws for South and it was 81-79 with 3.1 seconds.

Shipley hit two more free tosses to close out the scoring. Shipley finished with eight points for South and Stanley tallied 14.

Zach Murphy had 14 points for Casey, canning 4 of 5 3-pointers, and Wolfe scored 13.

“We played really well offensively and the kids did a good job on Wolfe,” said South coach Scott Ridge.

“South did a good job on Brandon and hit some open shots. Turner is a good player. We did not have an answer for him … we just didn’t make enough plays,” said Casey coach Steve Hawkins.

The Warriors have already played three ranked teams in compiling a 9-3 record and have 16-0 Newton coming up at home on Friday and unbeaten St. Joe-Ogden on Saturday.

  • Luck having fun with his first OTAs

A year ago, quarterback Andrew Luck was unable to attend the Indianapolis Colts’ organized team activity practices due to school commitments at Stanford.
Luck, though, went on to have a stellar year for the Colts despite the lack of summer work with the team. Still, in a sense, he is a rookie during this year’s OTA workouts.
“These are my first OTAs. I missed these last year, so I think it’s great. It’s great to get on the field with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff. Obviously, some of us ran some of this stuff [offense] at Stanford [under new offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton]. But to get out there with the defense and trouble-shoot some stuff is good,” Luck said Wednesday as the team wrapped up its first week of on-field voluntary practice sessions.
