Casey’s Wolfe erupts for 31

Warriors drop West Vigo; Linton, Monrovia also triumph

TERRE HAUTE — Casey senior Brandon Wolfe put up a top-20 all-time Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic scoring performance — 31 points — in the Warriors’ 68-49 consolation-bracket victory over West Vigo in boys high school basketball Friday afternoon inside Terre Haute South’s gym.

Wolfe came out of the gates with a hot hand, knocking down his first six shots to post 14 of his team’s first 25 points. Wolfe was happy to see his team pick up its play after a loss to Rockville in the opening round.

“Not to our potential, but we played a little bit better,” Wolfe said. “I just went home and practiced last night. We obviously didn’t have a very good game [Thursday]. We wanted to come back, have a good game and get our confidence back. West Vigo’s a good team.”

The Vikings were a good team at times Friday, but coach Joe Boehler’s group could not overcome 24 turnovers.

Casey led 25-12 20 seconds into the second quarter after taking command with a 12-2 start to the game.

“We kind of got behind the 8-ball,” Boehler said. “It didn’t look like we were interested in playing in the consolation bracket. We played pretty well after spotting them quite a few points.”

West Vigo closed the first half on a 9-3 run to pull within seven. The Vikings stayed close through the third quarter. Casey’s 6-0 spurt put it ahead 44-30 with 1:40 to go in the third, but the Vikings took some momentum into the fourth quarter. Kyle Stewart picked up a steal and assist to Aaron Kirby, then Stewart drove for a layup with 10 seconds left in the period to make it 44-36.

Casey pulled away in the fourth as Zach Murphy buried a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 spurt that made it 51-36 for the Warriors.

Murphy finished with 12 points and four steals, while Matt McCown chipped in 10 points for Casey.

Kirby led the Vikings with 12 points, while Stewart scored eight of his 11 in the second half.

“Our rebounding was better today, but we’ve got to take better care of the ball. Teams are taking things away from us and we’re just not countering it,” Boehler said.

• Linton 78, South Vermillion 46 — In a consolation-bracket contest early Friday night, the Miners seemed comfortable with a 20-point lead at halftime. Then they had an 11-for-11 third quarter from the field, including three 3-pointers.

Although the margin of victory enabled coach Joey Hart’s team to use every available player, that was valuable. With starting point guard Sam Dyar on the injured list indefinitely with a knee injury suffered in the first minute of Thursday’s game, tryouts for his spot are ongoing.

The Miners raced to a 17-3 lead and were never seriously threatened against the Wildcats, who played hard but shot miserably. South Vermillion’s 30-percent shooting paled next to the 65-percent marksmanship of the Miners.

“We’re just too big for [the Wildcats],” Hart said afterward.

Dess Fougerousse, who scored his 1,000th point in Thursday’s loss, sat out the first quarter Friday but still led all scorers with 22, hitting three 2-pointers and three 3-pointers in the perfect third quarter. Austin Karazsia added 20 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Keith Fulk had seven assists and freshman Joe Dieball had six points and four steals from the Linton backcourt. “We’re really excited about [Dieball’s] future,” Hart said, “We just didn’t think it would be this soon.”

Kaden Lawson had 12 points and five assists and Jordan Branz scored 11 for South Vermillion.

• Monrovia 65, Owen Valley 43 — Monrovia took command in Friday’s first game to win its fourth game in six starts.

The Bulldogs had a 21-11 lead after one period, led 36-31 at halftime and outscored the Patriots 19-2 in the third canto to take a 55-33 lead into the final frame.

Monrovia shot 53 percent from the field and made 23 of 28 free throws in addition to outrebounding the Patriots 27-15.

Chase Casteel had 28 points to lead the winners, getting 11 of those points in the third period. Jeremy Gray added 11 points to the Monrovia totals.

Josh Parker had 11 points for the Patriots.
