Wayne Newton tops Pate to move into title game

TERRE HAUTE — Based on the runs-allowed tiebreaker system being used, all Wayne Newton Post 346 needed to advance into today’s Terre Haute Invitational championship game was hold Evansville Pate Post 265 to 15 or fewer runs in a loss Saturday night.

Instead, Wayne Newton rallied in dramatic fashion to beat Pate 10-6 in the pool-play finale of the American Legion baseball tournament being played at Terre Haute North High School.

That left both teams on top of the pool-play standings at 3-1, which means they’ll face each other again for the tourney title at 2:30 p.m. today at North. Post 346 manager John Hayes said left-hander Kodie Girton will start on the mound for his squad.

In Saturday’s clash, Pate (the home team on the scoreboard) led 2-0 after two innings, 4-2 after three and 6-4 after four. But Post 346 starting pitcher Scott West kept his opponents from exploding for any significant outbursts, despite giving up solo home runs to Blake Hicks and Curran Davis.

Perhaps the turning point occurred in the Pate half of the fifth when Hicks tried to score by bulldozing over Post 346 catcher Dalton Sexton, who fielded a one-hop throw. But Sexton held on to the ball as he tagged Hicks out — keeping the score at 6-4 — then he stood up and gave Hicks a shove as the home-plate umpire ejected Hicks from the game.

“Evansville Pate is our biggest rivalry and I think this is their biggest rivalry,” Hayes assessed. “Whenever we play, it’s good baseball. It’s played hard and things like that are going to happen. Their baserunner didn’t mean anything bad by it. It’s just part of the game … [Sexton] got a little hot-headed about it, but who wouldn’t when somebody tries to run you over? I understand that.”

Wayne Newton tied the score at 6-6 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh, the Terre Haute squad erupted for four runs to seize a 10-6 advantage.

Bryan Nacke led off with a single and Preston Tofaute sac-bunted him to second base, then Daniel Marlow doubled to right-center field to bring home Nacke. T.J. Decker greeted new relief pitcher Davis with a triple into the same gap, which sent Marlow scurrying home with the eighth run.

Then came the big blow. Hayes sent Colton Rupska up to pinch hit for lead-off man Cody Thornton and Rupska walloped a two-run homer to right-center.

“We were up two at the time,” Hayes noted. “To go to a four-run lead with one inning to go was really big … He had been struggling a little bit, but he had a super sweet swing on that one.”

Sam Wolf relieved West on the mound in the bottom of the seventh, permitting one single as he preserved the victory for Post 346.
