Omaha, Neb. —
Senior Brittany Schoen became the all-time leader in career 3-pointers made on Sunday, knocking down her 264th trey. But Indiana State could not make Schoen’s record result in a victory, falling 63-48 to Creighton in a Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball game.
The loss drops ISU to 12-14 on the season, 6-8 in the MVC. Creighton improves to 15-11, 9-6
The score was tied at 15-15 with 7:41 remaining in the opening stanza. But the Bluejays pressure defense took over for the next three and half minutes, creating an 11-2 run to take a 26-17 lead with 4:04 left.
After Creighton took their largest lead of the half, at 29-19 with 2:29 remaining, the Sycamores closed the half on a 6-0 run to get within 29-25.
Deja Mattox had seven points and eight rebounds at the break, but 11 first-half turnovers by the Sycamores led to nine more shot attempts for the Bluejays in the opening half.
ISU’s offense struggled to get going in the second half, scoring just eight points over 13 minutes of action.
Schoen knocked down her record-setting trey with 2:07 remaining in the game, hitting a shot from the left wing after a cross-court pass by Taylor Whitley. Schoen passes Kelsey Luna (263) in the ISU record books and currently sits in fifth place in MVC history.
Sophomore Anna Munn led the team with 10 points, while Mattox came up just one point shy of her second career double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds. Whitley posted eight points, six rebounds and six assists.
ISU took better care of the ball in second half, committing just one turnover, but could not get their shots to fall as the team went 8-for-30 (26 percent) from the field.
Carli Tritz led Creighton with 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Sarah Nelson posted a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Indiana State returns to Hulman Center for their final homestand next weekend, hosting Missouri State on Friday and Wichita State on Sunday.
