Senior Al Escalera was named Indiana State’s second Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the 2012 season, according to an announcement by the league office Tuesday.
Escalera shattered the ISU record Friday by finishing the Notre Dame Invitational 8K course in 16th place with a time of 24 minutes, 5 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 24:17 set by Jason Gunn in 1999. Escalera’s time shaved 46 seconds off his previous best of 24:51 set in 2010.
• Sycamore honored — Indiana State sophomore kicker Tanner Fritschle has been recognized by The Fred Mitchell Award for his performance on the field during the month of September as well as his contributions to the Wabash Valley through the Sycamore football program.
Fritschle was one of 31 kickers honored nationally by the award committee Tuesday.
The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award is provided to the nation’s top collegiate placekicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The award is named for Mitchell, a record-setting placekicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist.
