Crowd goes silent when Collie goes down

INDIANAPOLIS — It was a moment that brought the announced crowd of 63,536 fans to a stunned silence. Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Austin Collie was lying motionless on the Lucas Oil Stadium playing field.

Collie — who has had a history of concussions since the start of the 2010 season — was down again after hauling in a 6-yard pass from rookie quarterback Andrew Luck early in the third quarter of Sunday’s 22-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Scoreboard video of Collie grimacing, holding onto his helmet, brought back too many scary memories for fans and team observers. This time — thankfully — it was not another concussion. Though still serious — a right knee injury that will require an MRI sometime today — the crowd breathed a slight sigh of relief as the fourth-year receiver from BYU was helped off the field by trainers and medical personnel.

It’s just another medical setback for the injury-plagued Collie, who has not played a full season in nearly three years.

Colts coach Chuck Pagano probably said it best afterward.

“[Austin] going out, it’s just devasting for him. It’s just a terrible, terrible thing. Fighting through what he’s fought through and then to have something like this happen. I don’t know the significance of it or what not. But obviously a devasting loss,” Pagano acknowledged after the game.

Luck was concerned, like everybody else watching the game, thinking it might be another concussion.

“It’s awful. I know for the first couple of seconds, I thought it was his head again. I was very scared for him. I’m not glad that it was his knee. But I’m thankful it’s not his head,” the Colts quarterback said. “It’s tough, some bad luck. He’s due for a break.”

Colts lose Satele, Davis and Justin King — Collie wasn’t the only significant loss for Indianapolis during the course of Sunday’s game.

Center Samson Satele, who injured his knee in last week’s win over Minnesota, started against the Jacksonville but couldn’t finish the game. Offensive right guard Mike McGlynn, like he did a week ago, moved over and finished the game at center.

Cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Justin King also were sidelined with ankle and groin injuries, respectively. Their loss was particularly noticed on Jacksonville’s eventual game-winning 80-yard touchdown pass from Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert to wide receiver Cecil Shorts.

The Colts were forced to play shorthanded, experience-wise, in the secondary. Recent roster addition Sergio Brown, normally a strong safety, was playing out of position on Gabbert’s touchdown toss to Shorts, which split the Colts secondary.

“We were out of bodies,” Pagano admitted. “Again, we make no excuses. Credit Jacksonville for hanging tough and making the play. They made one and we didn’t. You can sit there and evaluate. Hindsight is always 20/20. But we had some guys in there that don’t normally play at those positions. [We] were in that deep coverage concept [out] there and they split us, which can happen. But they made one heck of a play.”

Pregame inactives were quarterback Chandler Harnish, cornerback Josh Gordy, running back Delone Carter, inside linebacker Pat Angerer, offensive tackle Bradley Sowell, offensive guard Joe Reitz and outside linebacker Dwight Freeney.

Edgerrin James honored at halftime — Former Indianapolis running back Edgerrin James became the ninth inductee into the team’s Ring of Honor on Sunday.

He joined former Colts owner Robert Irsay, wide receiver Bill Brooks, offensive tackle Chris Hinton, former coach Ted Marchibroda, quarterback Jim Harbaugh, former coach Tony Dungy, wide receiver Marvin Harrison and the 12th man (honoring the team’s fans).

James was surrounded by his six children during the induction ceremony, which included a video presentation featuring several ex-teammates, including Denver quarterback Peyton Manning. Wide receiver Reggie Wayne and Freeney were two of the current players participating in the event.

Despite ending his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, the former No. 1 draft pick still considers himself a lifetime Colt.

“Always. Even when I was on other teams, I was always rooting for the Colts. I was always helping out players as much as I [could],” he said Sunday.
