REDNECK QUAKER: It didn’t get away: Father, son haul in 48-pound catfish

TERRE HAUTE — The men in the photo could have won about any tournament with this 48-pound flathead catfish.

I heard about this story, but knew that 12-year-old Jake Step and his dad Jeff would rather not give up the fishing location — for good cause. Let’s just say it was in the Wabash River area.

Trevin Cummins was part of the fishing party also.

They like to fish with bank poles, in other words a stick with a trot line type string and a No. 7 hook with live bait.

They said the water wasn’t real deep and when they started to play him, he didn’t fight as much as you would expect for a fish that size.

These guys are sportsmen to the max, for they were not bragging or boasting about the catch but more concerned with conserving their spot. The fish went back to the water to live another day. Let’s all take a lesson from these sportsmen.

I am hearing a lot about catfish tournaments in our area and to the West.

I was in Kansas over the July 4 weekend and spoke with many people catching six to eight pounders regularly with a 15 or 20 pounder on occasion.

Be ready to sit up all night and swat some mosquitoes, but when you hook into that big one, it’s all worth it.

The Mill Creek Park Catfish Tournament Series continues the following dates: July 23 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Aug. 20 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sept. 10 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Entry forms can be obtained at Mill Creek Park Gatehouse near Marshall, Ill. Call (217) 889-3601. Entry fee is $40. Teams consist of two or less people.

Seventy percent goes to the top 10 percent of the field. Only the six largest catfish will be weighed in. Optional $10 pot for largest catfish.

At the end of the series, the team with the most weight will be crowned Catfish Champion for 2011. Procees to benefit Relay for Life.

I am not promoting any one special outfitter or organization but I am looking for ways to get those kids outdoors. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on fishing tackle or a boat that will get you out where the big fish hide, look at a charter boat.

Yes, you’re thinking that’s hundreds of dollars but it might be better than thousands of dollars plus the maintenance to keep that outboard motor running.

After all, it may save you a divorce when you sell your wife’s engagement ring to purchase another boat motor. To catch some trophy fish in Raccoon Lake or Monroe Lake, call Reel-Me-In Fishing Charters at (317) 590-1061 or visit www.reelmeinfishing.com.
