PREP ROUNDUP: North, South to meet in 1st round of tennis sectional

---- — Terre Haute North and host Terre Haute South meet in the first round of high school tennis sectional play on Wednesday as a result of pairings drawn by the Indiana High School Athletic Association on Monday.

In just a four-team tournament thanks to realignment, the Braves and Patriots play at 5 p.m. Wednesday and so do West Vigo and Sullivan.

Championship match is 5 p.m. Thursday.

Baseball

• West Vigo 16, South Putnam 2
— For the second straight season, West Vigo player Brandon Calleja hit a grand-slam homer against South Putnam.

Playing at home, Calleja and winning pitcher Kevin Stewart each homered with the bases loaded to lead the Vikings to a 16-2 five-inning victory.

West Vigo exploded for eight runs in the third inning and six in the fourth to gain a huge advantage.

Highlights — For West Vigo, winning pitcher Kevin Stewart (3rd inning) and Brandon Calleja (4th inning) each hit a grand-slam homer, Alex West went 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBIs, Davie Inman and Lucas Fagg each went 2 for 3 with a double, Cogan Stewart also went 2 for 3 and Kaleb Blair delivered a 2-run single. On the mound, Kevin Stewart struck out 9 batters. For South Putnam, Rob Gibson went 2 for 3 and Justin Bumgardner added a double.

Next — West Vigo (15-9) will play Thursday at Clay City.

• Terre Haute North 2, Center Grove 1 — At Greenwood, Tony Rosselli and Sam Wolf delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles in the top of the fifth and Austin Hicks pitched a complete-game five-hitter as the Patriots improved to 7-5 in Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference play.

• Terre Haute South 5, Mooresville 1 — At South, Cody Brock pitched a four-hitter and Jacob Johnson, Daniel Marlow and Warren Rollings had two hits each.

• Shakamak 10, White River Valley 0 — At Jasonville, Brett Yeryar pitched a five-inning no-hitter — striking out eight batters and walking one — and Patrick Green and Brodie Crowe homered as Class A No. 2-ranked Shakamak clinched the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference title outright with the victory.

Next — Shakamak (19-4 overall, 8-0 SWIAC) will be at home today to take on Edgewood.



• North Central 14, South Knox 1 — At Vincennes, Tyler Strain went 3 for 3 to help the Class 2A No. 5-ranked Thunderbirds improve to 16-4 overall this season.

Also for North Central, Daniel Loveall knocked in four runs with a bases-loaded walk, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly. That gives him 10 RBIs over his last two games.
