Metro roundup: Fife makes top-10 finish in USA Championships
Eugene, Ore. — Indiana State graduate Jordan Fife placed ninth Saturday in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Track and Field Championships at Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Fife ran a time of 8 minutes, 48.16 seconds representing Team Indiana Elite. The winner, Josh McAdams, ran 8:29.91.
Indiana State junior Lauren Martin placed 13th overall in the women’s triple jump Friday, just missing a trip to the finals with a leap of 42-feet, 6-inches.
Martin was the second highest placing collegian in the field, topped by Kansas State’s Tiara Walpoo (43-1 3/4), which tied for ninth.
“[Martin] was really disappointed in not making the finals,” John Gartland, Indiana State women’s track and field coach, said. “But she did finish as one of the top nine women triple jumpers in the United States and that is quite an accomplishment.”
Martin was one of two current Sycamores in competition on Friday as freshman Sarah Snapp also competed in the USA Junior Outdoor Championships in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing 15th overall with a time of 14.75.
“It was not one of her best races but she competed against a very outstanding field and the experience will serve her well as she continues to compete for Indiana State,” Gartland said.
Also in competition were former Sycamores Fife and Aubrey Herring.
Fife, the ISU record holder in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placed 12th in the preliminaries Thursday.
Herring, the ISU record holder in the 110-meter high hurdles, placed 12th in the first round with a time of 13.45.
Kylie Hutson will compete in the women’s pole vault and sophomore Major Clay in the men’s high jump, both today.

• Post 346 juniors advance — At Hammond, the Wayne Newton Post 346 junior team advanced to today’s championship round of the Hammond Great Lakes Classic with two wins on Friday.

• Niflis wins first — At Bloomington, Kenny Niflis won the 21st running of the Sheldon Kinser Memorial for sprint cars Friday at Bloomington Speedway.
Niflis won the B-main and started 16th in the main. He took the lead on the 25th lap and had a nice cushion at the end in winning his first sprint car event.

Metro Roundup: ISU’s Hutson named Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year
Indiana State’s Kylie Hutson added another honor to her illustrious career at Indiana State as she was named the Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Wednesday. This was the second straight year that Hutson has received the award.

ISU football coach Miles will hire OC to replace Walters
Troy Walters resignation from Indiana State’s football staff won’t leave the Sycamores a coach down once football season starts. Though ISU players report for practice in a week, ISU coach Trent Miles said he does plan to fill the open offensive coordinator position left vacant when Walters took the job as wide receivers coach at Texas A&M on Monday.

Late night, tough loss: Nashville tops Terre Haute in 13-inning marathon
The formula for extra innings for the Terre Haute Rex is simple. If the day ends in a “y” you have a good chance to see free baseball at Bob Warn Field. Tuesday’s game against Nashville was no exception. The Outlaws forced extra innings with a two-run ninth inning and the game was decided in the 13th when Nashville broke through for an 11-9 victory in a game that lasted 4 hours, 41 minutes and which ended at nearly midnight.

TH Women's City: Rachael Pruett needs 20 holes to edge recent Sycamore
Ball State and Indiana State needed overtime to settle their differences Monday afternoon at Rea Park. Actually, this wasn’t basketball and neither university was officially involved. But both were proudly represented in the entertaining championship-flight finale of the Terre Haute Women’s City Match Play Championships as two extra holes were needed to determine a winner. Linton resident Rachael Pruett, a senior-to-be on the Ball State women’s golf team, won her third straight women’s city title by chipping in from 18 feet on the 20th hole (No. 2 on the course) and edging recent ISU graduate Mackenzie Mack 1 up.

They didn’t return to Putnam County with any giant-sized hardware Monday. But 17-year-old Chelsea Samuels of Greencastle and her grandmother, Gloria Curtis of Cloverdale, made the Terre Haute Women’s City Match Play Championships a fun family affair at Rea Park Golf Course.
