ISU golfer five shots off lead at big-time tourney

Knoxville, Tenn. — Indiana State junior Kayley Bodine fired a one-over par 73 to lead the Indiana State Sycamores after the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Collegiate Championships being played at the Fox Den Country Club in Nashville, Tenn.

Bodine, who is tied for 23rd after the first round, was two over at the turn but came back with a birdie on the par-four fourth hole to come in at one over.

North Carolina’s Sydney Crane, North Carolina State’s Lauren Doughtie and Marika Lendl of UCF each shot four-under 68s to lead the tournament on the par-72, 6,058-yard course.

Indiana State’s Breanne Smith shook is tied for 72nd in the tournament after carding a 79 in today’s first round. Mackenzie Mack finished with an 89 (94th overall) while Kelsea Ice shot a 91 (95th overall) and Diana Price 93 (96th overall).

The highly competitive field includes 18 teams, seven of which are ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top-25.

• Sycamores go 4 for 4 — At Des Moines, Iowa, the Indiana State Sycamores began the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships just like they did a year ago — winning all of their opening round matches.

Indiana State sophomores Sarah Meghoufel and Valeriia Petrovych entered the championships as the top seed in the Flight One Doubles division, opening today’s action with an 8-4 win over Southern Illinois’ Ame Blacketer and Fadzai Mawisire in the quarterfinals Friday morning.

Meghoufel, the number two seed in the Flight One Singles, posted a straight set victory over Kate Chybowski of Evansville, 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals Friday. The Sycamore sophomore will take on Veronika Leszayova of Drake in the semifinals Saturday. Leszayova defeated Northern Iowa’s Sampada Kanade 6-1, 6-4 Friday.

Volleyball

• ISU falls in 5 — At the ISU Arena, Indiana State won two of the first three games Friday in Missouri Valley Conference action against Drake, but the Bulldogs’ 25-19 win in the fourth propelled them to a five-game win.

Kelli Whitaker had 15 kills, Jodi Stoker 12 and Stacy Qualizza 10 to pace the Sycamores. Whitney Fromm had 51 set assists while Kristy Cox had 20 digs.

Indiana State (7-12, 1-6 MVC) plays Saturday against Creighton at 7 p.m. Drake improved to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in The Valley.

  • ISU's Webb wins heptathlon

    Indiana State’s Robert Webb captured the heptathlon Saturday at the Grand Valley State Big Meet as he totaled the second most points in ISU history while dominating the event. Webb scored 5,140 points, which is second only to former Sycamore Anthony Bertoli’s 5,189 points in 2008.
    Webb, a senior, established three more personal best efforts enroute to the overall victory as he ran 8.45 in the 60 meter hurdles and 2 minutes, 50.73 seconds in the 1,000 meters while also clearing 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault. Webb entered the second day of the event in the lead with 2,893 points after winning three of the four Friday events and setting personal bests in the long jump and shot put.
